Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok of Ovruch’s Kever Found

Shturem

Last week, Rabbi Yisroel Meir Gabbai of the Oholei Tzadikim Foundation discovered, after a long search, the kever of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok of Ovruch. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok was the son of the Tzemach Tzedek, and father in law of the Rebbe Rashab and namesake of the Frierdiker Rebbe.

The kever was found in the Beis Hachaim of Ovruch, which is in a state of great disrepair, and Rabbi Gabbai had a new matzeiva put up.

The Frierdiker Rebbe was named after Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok, who was his grandfather – the father of his mother Rebbetzin Shterna Sara.

Ovruch is located in the Zhitomir Region of Ukraine.

    This is WONDERFUL!

I wonder if Reb Yisroel Meir could also locate the kever of oldest son of the Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok of Ovruch, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Mordechai Schneersohn, who was the the Rov in Zhitomir. I went searching for his kever in the Bais HaChaim in Zhitomir a few years ago, but did not find it (I suspect it is in the oldest section, which is overgrown with weeds, near the Ohel of Rabbi Aharon of Zhitomir).

Rabbi Shneur Zalman Mordechai grew up in the household of his maternal Zaide, Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Twerski of Cherkassy (who was a grandson of both Rabbi Menachem Nochum of Chernobyl and Rabbi Aharon HaGadol of Karlin, also was a son-in-law of the Mitler Rebbe). At age 15, Reb Zalman Mordechai married his first cousin Perl Zalmanson (who like him was an ainekel of the Tzemach Tzedek, and seperately an ihr ainekel of the Mitler Rebbe, and a descendant of Rabbi Levi Yitzhok of Berditchov). At age 17, being a tremendous gaon, he was appointed Moireh D’Arah of Zhitomir (a VERY large Kehila). Subsequently, whenever he would go to visit his grandfather the Tzemach Tzedek, his Zaide would stand up for him. Being very uncomfortable with this, he said “Zaide, fahr vos shtait ihr for mir?”, to which the Tzemach Tzedek replied “Ich shtai nisht fahr dir, ober fahr der Toirah vos ligt in dir”. Reb Zalman Mordechai passed away in in his early 20’s during a Magaifa in Zhitomir, on the 24th of Nissan, two weeks after the histalkus of his Zaide the Themach Tzedek. He would presumably have been buried in the Bais HaChaim in Zhitomir. I, for one, would like to have his kever located.
