  • Mitzvos first, then chumros

There is a similar story I heard from Rabin Manis Friedman, that someone once came to his Shver, Rabbi Yochonon Gordon on Pesach and saw something there that not everyone eats on Pesach (maybe something processed) and asked him “you eat this?” To which he responded “if I were to make the menu, but the food, cook the food and serve the food then I wouldn’t eat it. But since my wife makes the menu, buys the food, cooks the food and serves it I go according to her standards”. We also find by Yakov that he didn’t let his chumros get in the way of human decency and what’s obligatory.

Rabbi Heller has been teaching this attitude to the Kollel Yungerlite for years now. In his Erev Pesach Shiur he teaches them how to be a Machmir. One is to be Machmir in Sholom Bayis, and not try to turn his wife back into a slave in Mitzrayim. That, he says is how to prepare for Pesach.
