Chanukah Music Video – Candlelight

The Maccabeats, Yeshivah University’s all-male a cappella group singing “Candlelight.”

I’ll tell a tale
Of Maccabees in Israel
When the Greeks tried to assail
But it was all to no avail

The war went on and on and on
Until the mighty Greeks were gone

I flip my latkes in the air sometimes sayin ayy ohh spin the dreidel
Just wanna celebrate for all eight nights singin ayy oh, light the candles

We say al hanissim
Oh yea for all eight nights
Then we play dreidel
By the candlelight

And I told you once
Now I told you twice
Bout the miracle
Of the candlelight

They took the field
The rivals thought “are they for real?”
But those macabees they’d never yield
They charged ahead with sword and shield

The war went on and on and on
Until the mighty Greeks were gone

I flip my latkes in the air sometimes sayin ayy ohh spin the dreidel
Just wanna celebrate for all eight nights singin ayy oh, light the candles

We say maoz tzur
Oh yea for all eight nights
Then we play dreidel
By the candlelight

And I told you once
Now I told you twice
Bout the miracle
Of the candlelight

And the great menorah
For eight days it kept on burning
What a celebration
A great return to Torah learning

Cuz I can feel it
And Ay-ay-ay
Nes gadol, nes gadol
Nes gadol hayah sham

I flip my latkes in the air sometimes sayin ayy ohh spin the dreidel
Just wanna celebrate for all eight nights singin ayy oh, light the candles

We say al hanissim
Oh yea for all eight nights
Then we play dreidel
By the candlelight

And I told you once
Now I told you twice
Bout the miracle
Of the candlelight

  • shocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gosh doesnt anyone hear know where this tune is from??? why is a chabad webite posting this? look at all these innocent kids listening to this song. Music effects the neshama!

  • Inappropriate

Since when is C.H advertising non-jewish music??? Unless some think it’s okay because a few words are different.

  • to the comments about it being goyish...

how would u know its goyish and therefore bad for ppl to listen too???

  • Goyishe music? How do YOU know?

    #5, #12 and #13
I love it! Who said goyishe music?
Let me explain, you heard it, you know where it comes from, hundreds of pple who pple who saw this video don’t, they have never heard the music before ( not everyone has TV or goes online listening to non jewish music ( I surely hope so at least ) and they have no other reference besides that they look like nice jewish boys singing nice chanuka music.
And, since when do chabadnicks not listen to adapted goyishe music? Have you heard their marches??

  • Definitely a goyish song

Right at the beginning there is a little pop up in the bottom left hand corner that says: ‘Based on Mike Tompkins’ version of “Dynamite” This is a very non-Jewish song. Even though there are jewish words, we shouldn’t be exposing ourselves to this type of music.

  • Shocked once again!!!!

the point is exactly how you said it, if i have made a mistake in my life and i now know the tune is goyish thats my issue, what i wrote about is that a chabad website is publishing a NOt jewish tune to people who are unaware what they are really litening to. This is a problem !!!! we are always so careful with e/ chasidishe detail that can efffect our children so why is this acceptable?
    now please respond

  • some1 stop those people from commenting!

It’s called being “Mis-hapech Chasheicha L’nehoira”. They took a non-Jewish tune and made it holy by using it for Judaism. They are awesome! He who criticizes such greatness needs to not be allowed anywhere near a computer or any other device that allows their opinion to be seen public.

u idiot! they’re misnagdim and that was most definitely not their intentions. as we all know music is very powerful and to take the negativity out of music and make it pure is something only someone of a higher nature can accomplish, like a rebbe or even a chossid!

  • still laughing

i love it so much that i even wached it about like 70 times i laugh at it with the person withn orenge suit and when the greeks get sceared is really funny and why is evrybody critsising it it is halleriuose

  • LOVE IT

i doNT KNOW WHY EVERYONE IS CRITICIZING IT IS THE CUTEST I WATCHED IT FROM WHEN IT WAS PUT ON THE INTERNET!!!

Sometimes people hear music they wish that they didn’t hear! It doesn’t mean that we need to expose it and offer it to the innocent children or other Jewish people looking at this website! A lubavitch website should not post something totally inappropriate for a lubavitch person to hear!

firstly, derogatory remarks are not the way to go when trying to win an argument. It’s usually a substitute for lack of intelligent conversation.

Secondly, I know some of these guys personally and they are far from being “Misnagdim”. You seem to be a very ghetto-type, almost fictional character that is quick to judge people based on their appearances.

And last, a song that is composed by a Jew stems from his “Neshamah” unless he has bad/evil intentions/thoughts during the composition. (And yes, this song is a composition. Compare it to the original song called “dynamite” and you will see many differences (not just in lyrics)).

    Have a Happy Chanukah!

  • unimpressed

I am trully shocked not just that it was posted specifically on this lubavich chabad site but rather that it was done at all. This should not have been filmed at all it is totally not at all in the slightest appropriate, it is really wrong of this guys. I am really unimpressed

  • LUV IT!

To all those that are “unimpressed” “shocked” “appalled” “disgusted” etc. Your are all living in little shtetls in your own little worlds completely oblivious to the world.
You live life in a completely backwards fashion, believing that “I’m a chossid and that makes me holier than thou” You are all stupid. This song rocks! :)

  • TO #32

Wow latent sinas chinam is allowed under banner of being a “chossid?”
im sure you consider yourself holier than most other jews, and apparently because you are so much better than them?
Did the Rebbe or any upstanding chossid ever use those terms? or is it just the new and improved chassidim such as yourself that have the right to?
“Jews are jews, and labels are for shirts” as the Rebbe said!!!
    Happy chanukah
