News 12 Video – Protests Beating in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Crown Heights Friday after the brutal beating of a 16-year-old boy.

Officials say the teen was beaten early Friday morning by a group of men at the intersection of Empire Boulevard and Albany Avenue. Members of the Jewish community blocked traffic at Empire Boulevard demanding that police move quickly to find the teen’s attacker.

According to officials, the men also robbed him before leaving the scene. Investigators believe the attackers took the teen’s money, bike and cell phone. Authorities say they believe the two attackers are black, and that the victim is a Hasidic Jew. The assault is being investigated a possible hate crime.

Police say the victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries. According to police, he was treated and has since been released.

Some neighbors say that while they may not know what prompted the attack, they can offer a solution to end it. They believe education is the key to solving any conflict, because the more groups know about each other, the sooner they will be able to come together as one.

Officials have not yet said if they have any suspects in the incident.

    To Mr. Berel Sugar,

Firstly Kol Hakavod for all that you are doing, and may you go from strength to strength in succeeding in all that you are doing.

May hashem protects us from any future issues.

Just one small tiny thing. (I hate to be a criticizer when i think its great what you are doing). Please stop mentioning Germany, yellow stars etc. Or at least if you do it, say it smartly. Its is NOT less safe to live in CH then it was in Germany. Though i understand the point you are trying to make, there are two problems with this approach. One its pretty offensive to the 6 million etc. and also if if you overuse this you will just make a laughingstock at of your quotes.

Again please dont take this the wrong way. What you are doing is a must!

    Chazak!

enough with them calling it “racial tensions”! this is a one-sided scenario of blacks beating jews!

Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree that there has been a disregard by the NYPD for the Jewish community in Crown Heights. Brooklyn is a dangerous place, but that doesn’t mean that the crime in Jewish Crown Heights is acceptable. The NYPD must step up its patrol in the area, especially now at the beginning of the summer. I completely support the Jewish community’s outrage and I marched out in the rain yesterday as well.

I only have two major criticisms of what I saw yesterday because I think people have to learn to speak responsibly when they’re protesting:

    1. The mantra “No justice, no peace,” was completely inappropriate and very un-Jewish. Civil demonstrations are a First-Amendment Constitutional right, but “no peace,” connotes mob-like behavior. I was almost embarrassed hearing it shouted over and over again.

    2. Deciding that every crime that happens to the community is a hate-crime sounds like crying wolf. NY State statute (Hate Crimes Act of 2000, Article 485) clearly says that “Proof of … religion … of the defendant, the victim … does not, by itself, constitute legally sufficient evidence satisfying the people’s burden ….” that the suspect “commits the offense and either: (a) intentionally selects the person against whom the act was committed …. (b) intentionally commits the act or acts constituting the offense … because of a belief or perception regarding the … religion, religious practice … of a person, regardless of whether the belief or perception is correct.” Robberies are brutal and horrid, but they do not automatically become hate-crimes and incorrectly labeling them as such by members of the community can have an overall detrimental effect on police-community relations.

  • Education

Education?! “Oh UM I didnt know that killing someone was frowned upon, but now that I know what a jew is I will become an upstanding citezen!?” Please. Maybe education in the School of Hard Knocks.

WHY DON’T YOU POST EMAIL ADDRESS’S OF THE POLICE AND NEWS STATIONS AND request THAT PEOPLE FROM ISRAEL, SOUTH AFRICA, BRAZIL, AUSTRALIA WRITE TO THEM?!?!?

  • Staying Cool in the Heat

I beg all of CH’ers..please … dont do anything dumb …. let the pro’s speak to the media … we do not need any hot heads .. no one bashing cars … screaming N words … let the word see …We demand protection and we are good citizens. The news will do everything in their power to focus …. that blacks are wrong and Jews are hotheads etc.

  • phil

    Let me get this straight…..

Attack on black by Jew = automatic hate crime.

Attack on Jew by black = We’ll get back with you.

The laws that were supposed to potect ALL people against hatred are being enforced to the benefit of blacks only.

Law enforcement thinks they can avoid confrontations with violents blacks who will riot at any perceived slight, if they appease the mob.

This is wrong and will no longer be silently tolerated.

Laws are meant to protect all, not just those who will create chaos if it’s not enfored “their way”.

Black on white crime is a reality and is racially motivated by virtue of the fact that white Jewish VICTIMS are perceived as weak and unable/unwilling to fight back.

Where is the Mayor hiding? There have been reports of attacks against the Jews in Crown Heights by blacks for some time, and allegations that the police always manage to “lose the paperwork”, letting the perpetrators get away. Mayor Bloomberg is not the CEO of New York City, he is the Mayor of all the people. I would expect him to speak out on this and to investigate his police department in Crown Heights. This should have been done some time ago, before it reached these proportions.

    in response to your comment

you tell me when the last time a black person was mugged in that part of crown heights

and since when robbery victim’s get left for dead beaten on the street

just because the anti Semitic racists took his wallet dose not take away from what this really is

WHEN caught they should be charged with attempted murder and hate crimes

  • abby

The fact is , for the past year and a half (at least)in crown heights there have been over a HUNDRED straight up BRUTAL anti Semitic crimes ,
maybe four have been reported on the news ?
many reports have just disappeared ?
the cops ignored lead after lead to catch the racist criminals ?
NOT ONE has been reported as a hate crime ???

a week ago in crown heights , a school bus full of CHILDREN , was attacked by a group of black children , with large rocks that came crashing through the bus widows,
if it were the other way around , we would be watching another crown heights RIOTS.

sugar said “its more dangerous to live in c.h. than it is to live in germany” not then in middle of the holocaust but now (is) which is quite true the government there is so worried about us claiming anti semitism that they go to the other extreme to protect us.

as for c.h. and b. sugar we finally have someone who is well connected and is prepared to stand up for us so what if he is a little brazen and exagerates a little firslty it gets us more attention and more protection 2nd if “they” (like sharpton etc) can do it and play the media etc why shouldnt we???

kol hakovod berel keep it up!!

  • Shmuel

    I see it this way:

Barry Sugar is the Sharpton-type spokeman Jews need. He may not know it, but that’s now the way it is.

Chanina has all the right contacts, but he can’t speak well. Moshe is going back to the can, so he cannot be involved. The lady from the museum did a lot of great work in her son’s memory, but she does not have the pulse of the community.

    Thank you Barry Sugar.

    to joe.
Well said , if Gulliani where here this would never happen , he kept a tight leash on the force , he demanded REAL results weekly that the crime is going down , he called a spade a spade , and wasn’t afraid or scared of hurting someone’s feeling , to do the right thing and protect the innocent no mater who they were ,

The problem is NOT only the local police department. The problem is ‘parity’ which produces’quotas’.
(I heard the parity idea from a fine and responsible person whom I’ve known for 30 years and who spoke to an important person recently).
Politicians, human-rights advocates, etc. argue that nation-wide white crime is close to minority crime. So the local police eager to please or avoid pressure try to ingnore minority crime and arrest whites: in this case a Jew.
The Andrew Charles case is a good example. There were no real injuries but the district attorney wants to start a grand jury, why?
Because Mr. Charles is the son of a cop? Partly. Also the locals (Inspector Vega, etc.) want more white arrests.
    A witch hunt.

Once (About 8 yrs. ago) my daughter, walking with another girl, was confronted at President Street and Albany Ave. at about 9AM.
One Black approached my daughter while the other stood near the corner as a lookout (Perhaps).
The Black demanded money. My daughter told him to go get a job like everyone else.
The Black pushed my daughter against a building. My daughter gave him a good kick to his private parts and he and the other roach fled!
Keep up the good work aishes chayalim of Crown Heights!
TO ALL BLACKS AND NON-JEWS WHO READ THIS POST: I AM A RACIST! SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME A RACIST. I DID IT FOR YOU!
    I HUMBLY ADMIT MY GUILT.
    DO YOU?

  • CHer

The “no justice no peace” chant was just absurd. And I agree – the Holocaust pity card can only be used so often before it just sounds idiotic and disrespectful. But Mr. Sugar – thank you.

I found it extremely careless when people started marching toward Utica.
    We don’t need another riot!
    Act smartly people!

  • You guys are the biggest losers!

dear boruch ben Tzvi(A H)haKohaine hoffinger:

does it make you feel more like a man to be racist. if its so bad, why dont you pack your bags and go back to isreal. oh wait, youll get your ass kicked over there too.

you guys are such dorks. seriously! go cry a river somewhere else.
