“I Want Him to Receive Matzos from Where I Get Mine”

Every year, already from the days of Chanukah, Crown Heights’ veteran Matzah bakery is working at full steam, churning out hundreds of fresh Matzos every day.

The Matzos from this bakery are shipped throughout the world, to Chabad families, Jewish communities and Shluchim in the farthest reaches of the planet, all under the supervision of the Crown Heights Beis Din.

These Matzos will be used to fulfill the Mitzvah of eating Matzah on Pesach, a Mitzvah which the Rebbe strongly encouraged every Jew to Fulfill.

The following story was related to CrownHeights.info by the bakery’s longtime and dedicated owner, Rabbi Yitzchok Tennenbaum:

*******************

One year, the Rebbe instructed his secretaries to send Shmurah Matzah to a certain well-known Jewish doctor for Pesach. He was one of those privileged few who would receive Matzos from the Rebbe every year before the holiday.

When the Rebbe later asked the Mazkirus if his request had been fulfilled, he was told that being that Rabbi Moshe Kozinitz, a Rov in Livingston, NJ, lived near this doctor, they asked him to arrange that Matzos be delivered to the doctor on behalf of the Rebbe.

Upon hearing this, the Rebbe responded “I want him to receive Matzos from where I get mine.” The Rebbe was referring to the Crown Heights Matzah Bakery, where the Rebbe would have his Matzos baked (through the Labkowsky brothers and with the help of several yeshiva bochurim) every year.

When Rabbi Kozinitz heard the Rebbe’s words, he was very surprised. “How did the Rebbe know that that particular year my Matzos weren’t from the Crown Heights!?” he exclaimed in wonderment.

For many years, Rabbi Kozinitz would regularly come to Crown Heights to bake his Matzos. That year in particular, for whatever reason, he had his Matzos baked elsewhere. When the Rebbe’s secretariat asked him to deliver Matzos to the doctor, he had prepared to give him Matzos from his own batch.

Now that the Rebbe made it clear he wanted the doctor to receive Matzos from his bakery, Rabbi Kozinitz made sure that the Rebbe’s request was fulfilled to last detail.

  • Saying it like it is

For many years. The Albany matzah bakery, run by either r shiya Korf or by r Dubrawski and r Tennenbaum had absoloutly NO hashgocho.
On the boxes it said “baked by talmidei Lubavitch”
Then a tumul was made and they took rabbi Marlow.
