400 Gather in Phoenix to Show Support for Israel

As Israelis experience a wave of recent terror attacks, members of Phoenix’s Jewish community are showing solidarity with Israel in a variety of ways that include reciting prayers, doing good deeds, sending cards, advocating for Israel and traveling there.

On Oct. 18, approximately 400 people, about 100 of them children, joined a unity prayer gathering at Beth Joseph Congregation. “Our brothers and sisters need us and let us all come together to pray for them and show our support,” read an email announcing the gathering.

The overall message was that showing  unity “helps out all of us because we’re one nation,” said Rabbi Yossi Friedman of Chabad of Anthem, who coordinated the program. Local rabbis from various Orthodox congregations spoke and attendees said chapters of psalms together. In a separate children’s program, youngsters made cards for victims injured in attacks and IDF soldiers, as well as recited psalms, gave tzedakah and talked about how they could help Israel by doing good deeds.

“All these things are really what we can do here in America to help out the Jews in Israel,” Friedman said. “That’s our contribution. The more good deeds we do here, the more they’ll help.”
