Chabad House Opens Doors in Saint-Lazare, Quebec

After a long fundraising campaign, the Chabad House of St. Lazare, Hudson, and Vaudreuil  – located in southern Quebec, Canada – welcomed all members of the community to a grand opening ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 18.

From The Suburban:

In the crowd were many of the families who have attended services in the house at 1955 Ste. Angelique in St. Lazare well before it was renovated, families who meet with Rabbi Nachum Labkowski and his wife Malki at their home for Shabat meals, Hebrew school activities, and Seders.

The opening was also well attended by local politicians, including St. Lazare Mayor Robert Grimaudo, and two of the region’s parliamentary candidates, incumbent Jamie Nicholls and Liberal opponent Peter Schiefke, only a day before the federal election.

It was an important day not only for the Rabbi and Malki Labkowski, but for the team that took on the challenge of raising the funds for a community centre for members of Vaudreuil-Soulanges’ Jewish community. That community has a rich and deep connection with the region, as research conducted by Elaine Steinberg has revealed, so it is fitting that there is finally a permanent home for the Jewish families of the region.
