After Leibel Ferris, son of Shluchim in Berkeley, California, was featured on ‘Humans of New York’ along with his parents ‘interesting’ background, 157,358 people ‘liked’ the post and created an interest in the word ‘Hassid’ and as result exposed thousands to Chabad.
Laibel was featured on Humans of New York while walking on President Street in Crown Heights. Brandon Stanton, founder and photographer of HONY, followed his traditional style of engaging random strangers and gleaning an interesting tidbit about them in a short period of time.
Stanton summarized their encounter with a brief synopsis about how Ferris’s parents met; “My grandparents aren’t religious at all. They told my mother: ‘You can bring home a white man, a black man, an asian man, or a hispanic man. Just please don’t bring home a Chassid. So she brought home a Chassid.”
His father Rabbi Yehuda Ferris, who was recently named one of ’Americas Most Inspiring Rabbis’, told CrownHeights.info that the HONY post “made “Chassid” the most trended word on Google! A corresponding jump in the search under “Chabad.org” was also found.”
