Jewish Discovery Center Opens in Brandon, FL

More than 150 community members gathered at The Jewish Discovery Center’s new facility in Brandon, Florida on Sunday for a grand opening ceremony and the announcement of programs to be offered at the center.

The local educational organization will employ a “cafeteria-style” approach to Jewish community programming, organizers say. Throughout the year the center will offer educational, family and community events and ongoing programming. There will be no membership, allowing the community to “cherry-pick” freely and partake of whatever programs and services suit their individual or family needs and budget.

The approach was devised by Rabbi Mendel Rubashkin and his wife Tzippy, co-directors of Chabad of Brandon. They opened Chabad of Brandon in the summer of 2004 and to better cater to the needs of the local community, have now established the Jewish Discovery Center, an affiliate of Chabad of Brandon.

“Our goal is to create a smorgasbord of Jewish programming, allowing people from all backgrounds to choose whatever best speaks to them,” said Rabbi Rubashkin. “Judaism should not be an all-or-nothing experience.”

Following the ceremony, participants enjoyed desserts, hors d’oeuvre and entertainment for children.

The Jewish Discovery Center, 1578 Bloomingdale Ave., offers classes and programs open to all, including monthly Shabbat dinners, children’s cooking programs and classes with titles such as “Where Did all the Miracles Go?” and “Why Kosher?”
