Wednesday: Shloshim for Mrs. Dinah Abrahamson, OBM

A Shloshim memorial event marking 30 days since the passing of Mrs. Dinah Abrahamson, OBM will take place this Wednesday, 14 Shevat (January 15) at YAM, 268 Brooklyn Avenue on the corner of Lincoln Place at 8:00pm.

Rabbi Levi Kaplan and Rabbi Shloma Majeski will speak. Yosef Abrahamson will make a siyum on Mishnayos.

Many people in the Crown Heights community became acquainted with Mrs. Abrahamson when she moved there in 2007 from Nebraska. Omaha, where she was born and raised, was also the place where she became a dedicated member of the Republican party and a Nebraska State Central Committee Member.

In 2012, Dinah and her family were featured on the Oprah Winfrey show. People beyond Crown Heights, Omaha and Washington D.C. now had a glimpse into who this special woman was. Yet, despite all of the government connections and publicity, at the end of the day, Dinah’s passion was being a dedicated mother to her two children, Sarah and Yosef, a doting grandmother, and a devoted friend.

As one of Sarah’s friends wrote:

Even though I’d only met your mother a few times I have always thought of her as the ideal mom. I remember all those parties she made and hosted, and sometimes they were just for the fun of it. The last one I went to was the Purim one, where we decorated masks. But the highlight of the evening, in my eyes, was seeing your mom with Ella. She was the proudest grandma I’ve seen. She lovingly held Ella as she kvetched and showed us her treasure trove of pictures… of her kids, in laws, granddaughter and what not. I loved her easygoing and flexible personality…it permeated everything she did. From her cool work life, about which she never got tired of answering our curious questions, to the way she was integrated into her kids’ lives as a hands on mom…like come on, who feels comfortable enough to bring their mom to work with them?!? Your mom was a special person, someone who I would want to emulate as a mother to my kids iyH.

Dinah Abrahamson always said to “vote Torah,” and how this country is in danger of losing its values. It wasn’t that long ago that I would have dismissed such talk as alarmist extreme fringe lunacy, but now I see that it is true – and that your mother was right; we need to take a stand and push back. Dinah always knew what to say to whom. She always said the right thing, and always with the Midwest Heartland friendliness that is so absent in so many of the people we meet nowadays. I actually would look forward to speaking with her on the phone because it was so refreshing to have a folksy conversation the way they’re held in the rest of the country outside of New York….

She moved to Crown Heights only a few years ago and managed to make more friends here than most people make their whole lives! She was one of the most intelligent and articulate women I’ve ever met. Dinah’s smile and optimism will be missed.

I remember Mrs. Abrahamson speaking at Machon Chana and when she spoke about her children you could really feel how proud she was of her children and how she held them dear to her. We all want to wish her family all the best and to only hear of good news and that her children, grandchildren…continue to give her much nachas!
