Weekly Photo: From Days Gone By

CrownHeights.info and Lubavitch Archives present this vintage photograph of elder Chassidim at the Rebbe’s farbrengen. Can you identify those in the picture and when it was taken?

Answer to last week’s photo in the extended article.

Answer to last week’s photo:

This picture was photographed in 1970, as (currently) Israel’s President Shimon Peres was leaving 770 after a Yechidus with the Rebbe.

The Rebbe wrote to Mr. Peres’ wife afterwards, “It was a pleasure for me to meet your distinguished husband and especially in regards to our meaningful conversation. May G-d bless him to be successful and to utilize his ambition and talents, that he was blessed with, for the good of the Holy Land and the Jewish nation to whole the Land was given to for eternity.”

in a 1990 speech, Mr. Peres said about the Yechidus, “When I visited the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s court, I had an audience with the Rebbe for two hours. I heard words of wisdom from him regarding the situation in Israel that I will never forget for the rest of my life.”

The photo is from the Menachem Wolff Collection.

This picture was taken on or about Yud Shvat 5730 (1970) – on possibly, one of the following three dates: 9th, 10th, or 20th of Shvat. Friday afternoon ninth of Shvat was the Siyum Sefer Torah of Moshiach, Motzoei Shabbos tenth of shvat was the Yud Shvat Farbrengen and the twentieth of Shvat was a goodbye Farbrengen for all the guests who came to the Rebbe for Yud Shvat – 20th anniversary.

After Zalman Butman is Elye Chaim Roitblatt, NOT Henoch Zaklikovsky. Also, if you look closely, there is a person sitting between Lieberman and Pliskin. Can anyone identify him?

As already mentioned, this is from Shevat 5730, since Reb Shlomo Chaim came to 770 only twice, the first time around 5722, the second time in shevat 5730, a year and a half before he passed away, and this picture is from the second time in 770.

  • MEMORY LANE

The person sitting between Reb Zalmen Butman and Reb Abbe Pliskin is Reb Eli Shmuel Kahanov
