Massive Power Outage Throughout South Brooklyn, as ConEd Cuts Power

Con Edison cut power to over 30,000 people in Brooklyn Sunday evening, after a series of outages threatened to become a massive power failure.

To stave off disaster, Con Ed cut power to large swaths of South Brooklyn, including Mill Basin, Flatlands, Flatbush and Canarsie.

The outage, which comes during a massive heat wave in the northeast, was done, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, so the power company could “make repairs and prevent a bigger outage.”

The majority of the outages were in Brooklyn, while areas of Queens and The Bronx were also effected.

An earlier warning sign came as Con Edison asked customers in Southeast Brooklyn to conserve energy. Customers in/near Flatbush, Prospect Park Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Canarsie and more not to use energy-intensive appliances after many power outages in the area.

“City agencies are working with Con Ed to resolve this as quickly as possible,” de Blasio said.

As of 11:39 p.m. ET, over 52,000 people were without power, although not all were connected to Con Edison’s move.
