State police and hundreds of other law enforcement agencies across New York are about to launch a two-week seat belt enforcement blitz.

State police officials say their troopers and officers from more than 500 police agencies will be setting up safety restraint checkpoints throughout New York starting Monday and running through June third.

The enforcement measures are timed to coincide with the Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of the summer travel season.

Police officials say about 15% of motorists in New York state still fail to wear seat belts.

During last year’s “Buckle Up America Week,” state police say troopers issued more than 10,000 tickets to motorists who weren’t wearing seat belts.

  • JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM THE NYPD

THE PEOPLE IN THE FRONT SEAT ARE ALWAYS REQUIRED TO WEAR THERE SEAT BELTS. NOW THE RULE WITH THE BACK SEAT IS 16 AND UNDER. IF A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 16 GET CAUGHT WITH OUT SEAT BELT THE DRIVER GETS THE TICKET.

By the way – CHildren under 40 lbs or 7 years of age need to be in car seats and children between 40 and 90 lbs need to be in booster seats. Drivers can get tickets for those as well. No seat belts/car seat tickets I think are points off the liscense – if you have a question just call 311 for help.
