Even More Snow Headed to NYC Tuesday

Yet another winter storm is set to push over the tri-state area Tuesday, and could add 2 to 4 more inches to what is already the third snowiest February ever recorded in New York City, forecasters say.

After a chilly Presidents Day with highs below the freezing mark, a snowstorm will move in early Tuesday, forecasters say. Wet, sloppy snow will begin falling before the morning rush and is expected to continue into the early afternoon.

About 2 to 4 inches are expected in New York City and nearby suburbs — an increase from earlier projections — while 4 to 8 inches or more may fall north and west. One to 2 inches are expected along the Jersey coastline and on the south shore of Long Island.

Meteorologists caution the track of the storm is very fluid, and storm projections may shift as the system moves closer.

After the storm passes, forecasters say, the area will begin a week-long thaw. Highs in the 40s are expected from Tuesday through Sunday and could top 50 degrees Friday. The warmer temperatures will rapidly melt snow, which could cause localized flooding in some spots.

This winter has been the eighth snowiest on record in New York City, with 55.6 inches of accumulation in Central Park. That’s more than double the yearly snowfall average of 27 inches. February has been particularly snowy, with 27.3 inches.

The city’s record for snowfall is 75 inches, set during the 1995-96 winter season.
