NYC Asks Secret Shoppers to Report Overcharges, Violations at Supermarkets

NY Post

The city issued a call for “secret shoppers” who’d be willing to report overcharges and other violations at supermarkets via Twitter.

The Department of Consumer Affairs said information coming in would be compiled and treated as “enforcement tips.”

Inspectors would be dispatched to locations with a pattern of complaints. The agency asked the newly deputized shoppers to tweet reports of violations to @NYCDCA using the hashtag #nickeled&dimed.

Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz is on the warpath against supermarkets, charging that their compliance rate with city regulations plummeted in the last round of inspections.
