Boruch Dayan Hoemes: Mr. Zack Miller, 86, OBM

With sadness we info you of the sudden passing yesterday of Mr. Zack “Zacko” Miller OBM, a resident of Pico, California who was very active in the Chabad community. He was 86 years old.

Zacko was a regular at Chabad at UCLA in the 1970’s, then under the direction of Rabbis Yerachmiel Stillman and Shlomo “Schwartzie” Schwartz.

He was a sweet man who was loved by all and always willing to do another a favor.

“Zacko was everyone’s friend, everyone’s uncle,” wrote Rabbi Eli Friedman of Chabad of Calabasas, California, on his Facebook page, “He came and enjoyed himself and kvelled at our son’s Bar Mitzvah on last Thursday night, called as always on Friday to say good Shabbos, and today his grandson found him in his apartment.”

In a recent interview Zacko recalled how Rabbi Shmuel Dovid Raichik was a great influence on his life. Every week, after Shabbos ended, people would flock to the Raichik’s home, he recalled for a forthcoming book on Rabbi Raichik. “It was the best show in town,” said Zacko. “There were people present from all segments of society. Everyone was debating, discussing, and eating. Throughout the entire time, Rabbi Raichik seemed oblivious to what was going on, and he just walked around making sure everyone was okay.”

Once Zackowas asked to donate his time to cater the wedding of a man named Dave. But on that same night there was another wedding which Zacko wanted to attend. He made sure to finish everything necessary for Dave’s wedding before going to the other.

On the way back home he saw Rabbi Raichik walking and he offered him a ride, which the rabbi accepted. Rabbi Raichik, worried about Dave’s wedding, wondering if people were attending and asked, “How come you didn’t go to Dave’s wedding?”

He would tell how he learned from Rabbi Raichik how to always feel for the needs of another.

His Levaya will be on Wednesday, 12:00pm at Mount Olives Cemetery, 7231 East Slauson Ave. Commerce, California 90040.
