Boruch Dayan Ho’emes: Reb Gershon Chanowitz, 91

With sadness we inform you of the passing of Reb Gershon Chanowitz, OBM, of Boro Park, at the age of 91.

Reb Gershon was born in the Town of Gluboke, Belarus to Reb Ben Zion, whose family were Chasidei Chabad for generations.

He was sent at a young age to learn in Tomchei Temimim in Otvotzk, Poland, as well as in Shanghai, China during World War II.

He was Zocheh to be at the Freidiker Rebbe’s Pesach S’dorim for many years.

Some Ma’amorim we have today of the year 5699 (1938-1939) were given to the Rebbe from his Seforim.

He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom are on shlichus.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lea Chanowitz, and their children: Mrs. Elki Elbaum – Boro Park, Rabbi Moishe Chanowitz – Montreal Canada, Mrs. Shifi Kohl – Boro Park, Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz – Shliach of the Rebbe in Monticello, NY, Mrs. Esti Fishman – Boro Park, Mrs. Simi Schtrocks – Shlucha of the Rebbe in Surrey, Canada, Rabbi Sruli Chanowitz – Monsey, NY, Mrs. Chani Schiener – Shlucha of the Rebbe in Boulder, CO; and well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Levaya will take place today at Shomrei Hadas Chapels on 14th Ave & 38th Street at 1:00pm. It will continue to 770 Eastern Parkway at 1:45pm.

The burial will be at Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens.

The Shivah will be at the Chanowitz residence at 1556 43rd St., Brooklyn, NY, until Monday morning.
