After a Decade, Jerusalem Has New Chief Rabbis

In a race replete with political intrigue and legal drama, Rabbi Aryeh Stern has been elected as the Chief Ashkenazic Rabbi of Jerusalem, and will serve alongside Rabbi Shlomo Amar, the Holy City’s new Chief Sephardic Rabbi.

The two rabbis fill posts which have been empty for over ten years, following a protracted legal battle over the electoral process for the coveted positions.

According to election officials, the runners up for Sephardic Chief Rabbi in descending order were Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu and Rabbi Chaim Amsellem. The runner up for Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi was Rabbi Moshe Chaim Lau.
