The much lauded bill, named the First STEP act, has passed the senate with a sweeping 87-12 vote.

The bipartisan bill gives judges more discretion when sentencing some drug offenders and boosts prisoner rehabilitation efforts. It also reduces the life sentence for some drug offenders with three convictions, or “three strikes,” to 25 years. Another provision would allow about 2,600 federal prisoners sentenced for crack cocaine offenses before August 2010 the opportunity to petition for a reduced penalty.

The bills next step is the House of Representatives, where it expected to pass this week.

From there, it will land on the Presidents desk, who has shown strong support for the bill.

There were some critics of the bill, who were concerned that some aspects of the bill would create increased danger. their last minute attempts at amendments were rejected, and the bill passed.
