Israeli Court Rules in Favor of Religious Freedom

An Israeli court ruled in favor of religious freedom. The ruling – handed down this weekend, sided with two religious newspapers who refused to publish an ad that did not fit their religious beliefs.

During the 2015 Knesset elections the woman’s “Bezchutan party” wanted to publish a political ad in the papers. Both newspapers refused to publish the ads. Mrs. Kolian filed a lawsuit, claiming that the newspapers discriminated against her because she is a woman.

The court found that the papers did not discriminate based on gender but rather rejected the ads because they did not fit with their religious beliefs.

The case is similar to an ongoing case here in the US. Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado is the case of a religious baker from Colorado. Jack Phillips was fined when he refused to bake a wedding cake for an event that is against his religion.

The case is currently in front of the supreme court. A ruling is expected later this year.
