Trump Budget Eyes Big Cuts to Food Stamps

President Donald Trump’s budget would drive millions of people off of food stamps, part of a new wave of spending cut proposals coming from Capitol Hill.

from Time:

Trump’s blueprint for the 2018 budget year comes out Tuesday. It includes a wave of cuts to benefit programs such as Medicaid, federal employee pensions, welfare benefits and farm subsidies.

All told, according to people familiar with the plan, Trump’s budget includes $1.7 trillion over 10 years in cuts from such so-called mandatory programs. That includes cuts to pensions for federal workers and higher contributions toward those pension benefits, as well as cuts to refundable tax credits paid to the working poor. People familiar with the plan were not authorized to discuss it by name and requested anonymity.

Cuts include a whopping $193 billion from food stamps over the coming decade — a cut of more than 25 percent — implemented by cutting back eligibility and imposing additional work requirements, according to talking points circulated by the White House. The program presently serves about 42 million people.

  • About time

There’s too much cheating going on. People with gold chains and fancy cars should not be getting any subsidies.
People who sit around all day doing nothing should not be getting subsidies (unless they are truly to sick to work, elderly, looking after kids to young for school etc.)
    Enough of this free money.

  • The program needs an overhaul

What the foodstamp program – and all programs – desperately need are a way to help people wean off. There shouldn’t be such a massive gap between being elligible for help and being able to afford it yourself.

People stay in low-paying jobs because they are dependent on the government help, and if they work on steadily increasing their income, they will be inneligible for any help well before they can afford to pay for everything themselves.

How does this make sense? It seems to not benefit anyone – not individuals and not the greater society.

But the budget is not balanced and he gives tax cuts to the wealthy why?.

    • Answer

When the wealthy pay lower taxes, they either buy more goods and services — generating more tax revenue via sales taxes or taxes — or they invest the money — generating more tax revenue via taxes on those investments.

Often, also, when a wealthy person has some of their tax burden relieved, the wealthy person invests more in their own businesses. When businesses are invested in by their owners, it expands the economy as follows:
      1) This expansion results in the need for more workers.
      2) Employing more workers puts unemployed people to work,
      3) When the unemployed change to being employed, their work generates more tax revenue from those workers’ wages.
      4) AND more tax revenue is generated from the increased profit those businesses make from the expansion.

Therefore, these “tax cuts to the wealthy” generate more revenue to the IRS, AND they help lower unemployment.

This has been proven in prior administrations, when there were tax cuts to the wealthy. Most of the wealthy are very generous and wish to expand their businesses as much as possible.

Employment is already growing (unemployment is already declining) in the new presidency. With more people going back into the work force, or working real full-time jobs instead of under-30-hours jobs for employers who can’t afford the old Obamacare mandate, there should end up being less need for Food Stamps and several other welfare programs.

There will always be welfare programs for the truly needy, both via the government and via private charities and gevirim. But any rich person will tell you that when more people have jobs, there is less need for charity.

He’s not “giving” tax cuts to anyone; the taxes people pay are their money, not his, so by not taking quite so much is not giving them anything. If a mugger takes $80 instead of $100 he’s not giving you anything.

Tax cuts go by definition mostly to the “wealthy”, because only they pay significant tax in the first place; you can’t cut the taxes of someone who pays nothing.

The truly wealthy pay far more than their fair share of the government’s expenses, and they will still pay far more than their fair share, even if it’s a little less.

  • Yanki

Oh no!!!!! People will poshut have to find a job now!!! this is terrible!!! And some will now give more tzedakah!!! as more needy families will not have food stamps!!!! Win Win!!!! oh yes!!!! Great.

  • Moishe pipek

Stop this stupid loalty to Trump. He slaid the enviroment.wants to balance the budget on the backs of the poor. And will at least try to give Israel to the Arabs with the blessing of Natanyaho, who seems to worship him

  • The Rebbe Started Food Stamps

The commentersnherenI guess disagree with the Rebbe, who was the reason Senator Chisolm initiated food stamps in the beginning.
You should all tell the Rebbe that it be would be better if people work.
But I’ll go with my Rebbe….

    • Meir

None of us need to tell the Rebbe that “it would be better if people work.” Innumerable times about he spoke about how Hashem put us in this world to do and accomplish, not to eat “nahama dekisufa,” unearned bread of shame.

So no, you’re not “going with your Rebbe,” but with a fictitious version of one.

    • Milhouse

Bobbe mayses. The Rebbe did not start food stamps. Nor did Chisholm.

  • Say it like it is

Way overdue. Way too much abuse of program going on, both within our community and without. There is no reason that something like a third of America should be receiving food stamps.

  • The Rebbe Started Food Stamps

The Rebbe started food stamps and Truns is takin it away.
The Rebbe wanted more food for poor pople and Trump said less food for poor people.

The Rebbe advised Senato Chisolm to start the food stamps program.

The Rebbe did not tell Senator Chisolm that she should start programs to take away from the poor.

This is clearly bad for poor and disabled Jews.

If you don’t have it in your heart to see that, I don’t know where you get your Yiddishkeit.

  • The Rebbe Started Food Stamps

The Rebbe told a black liberal senator to start the food stamps program while at the time republicans were against it.

So the Rebbe not only supported but in fact instituted food stamps through a black liberal senator, one of the most liberal ever.

And the Rebbe knew what the future of the program would be.

But now Trump has put going against what the Rebbe advised.

    • Meir

I notice that you have no answer to what I pointed out about “nahama dekisufa,” so all you can do is keep on spamming the comments with the same narishkeit. Please find anywhere where the Rebbe said that food stamps are for everyone, and that need and means testing shouldn’t be done. You won’t find it, because the Rebbe was not a “chassid shoteh” like you, and understood the difference between helping the needy and making them permanently dependent.

  • The Rebbe Started Food Stamps

Chosid shouted is you who not only goes against the Rebbe’s drochim but does so in a manner which takes food and health care away from poor Jews.

What incredible chutzpah you have to Judah and say who should and shouldn’t work.
Do you kbow all the stories?
How about disabled people? Does the budget exempt them?
You are taking away food from hundreds of thousands of Jews in one go because a segment should go work?
Are you read to go before your creator and brag that you supported the diminished of food and health care to poor yiden?

    • Meir

Those who genuinely can’t work and need food stamps will continue to get them under this budget. Those who can work will not. Shouldn’t be that hard to understand, and your hiding behind your caricature of what the Rebbe said doesn’t change the facts.

  • The Rebbe Started Food Stamps

This isn’t about Democrat or Republican, Trump or Hillary left right or whatever.
This is about Yiden not having food and health care.

    • Meir

You’re the one who keeps on bringing up politics, not I or anyone else, so cut it out with the “I’m-above-it-all-it’s-not-about-Democrat-or-Republican” shtick.

And again, since you seem to have trouble getting it: Jews – and non-Jews – who need food stamps and really can’t do without them, will continue to get them. Those who until now have been taking them, when they could instead have been working gainfully, will not.

  • Milhouse

THE REBBE DID NOT START FOOD STAMPS. Nor did Chisholm. Stop telling lies.

  • Milhouse

The Torah does not allow forcibly taking money from one person and giving it to another. That is stealing, and a ben noach gets the death penalty for it. Nor is it one of the legitimate functions of a malchus, so dina demalchusa won’t help you.

Even within Jewish communities, where the Torah requires a communal tzedokoh and tamchuy, it forbids giving this money to anyone who doesn’t honestly need it. That rules out all government programs, which give to almost all comers and see their function as increasing their “client base” and budget rather than saving the taxpayer money.
