Ikea Recalls 29 Million Dressers After 6 Kids Killed

Ikea is recalling 29 million chests and dressers after six children were killed when the units toppled over and fell on them.

The chests and dressers are unstable if they are not secured to a wall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

All of the children killed were 3 years old or younger, the CPSC said. One child was killed about 27 years ago. The other deaths were more recent, between 2002 and 2016. The CPSC said it also received 36 reports of children who were injured.

There are as well floor wedges that are placed in front to secure the stability of the item; these are used often with bookcases.

  • Why recall?

6 tragic deaths in 27 years? And how many millions pic units? That’s a pretty good track record. They should just offer free wall mounting or stabilizer kits.

So glad I didn’t get rid of my drop side crib. At my age I would drop the baby of I had to reach over the side to put my grandchild down for a nap.
All you have to do is check that the mattress fits tightly, screws are tight and nothing is warped.
People have to start using their brains again.

  • Info

They are offering free wall mount kits. However, they are also offering refunds for qualifying items purchased between 2002-2016. Don’t know about everyone else, but I’m going to upgrade my furniture…

  • Let's get all the facts

When I’ve previously read about furniture toppling over, it was usually because a child had used the drawers as steps and the weight of the child on the extended drawer had caused the cabinet to fall.

Maybe lessons in child care are in order, unfortunately. We can not child proof the world.

ALWAYS KEEP HEAVY ITEMS IN THE BOTTOM DRAWER! SAME WITH BOOKCASES – THE LARGE AND HEAVY SFARIM SHOULD BE ON THE BOTTOM SHELF!
