War of Words Erupts With a Barrage of Open-Letters

(L-R:) Moshe Rubashkin, R. Osdoba, R. Schwei

R. Schwei recently wrote two letters to the community. One letter accuses the Rosh HaKohol Moshe Rubashkin has been running the Vaad HaKohol in an ‘unacceptable manner’. The other letter, states that R. Segal was illegitimately appointed. The letters also lays blame on R. Osdoba of being a ‘Nogeah Badavar’ and stated that R. Osdoba himself, has been called to a Din Torah.

In response, Rubashkin published a 67 page booklet, filled with letters on a number of issues, ranging from Rabonim Elections [which makes up the brunt of it] to the Purim Seudah.

Regarding R. Schwei’s statement, Rubashkin remarked, that “anyone would ask himself, wait R. Schwei is accusing R. Osdoba of being a Nogeah Badavar? He himself has his own issues between himself and R. Osdoba! What would that make R. Schwei?”

In the extended article are both the letters and the booklet.

According to the Rov of the Kehilla, Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, who was appointed by the Rebbe to the Beis Din, Rabbi Schvei can only serve if Rabbi Segal serves. That was the condition of Rabbi Schvei’s election. Does Rabbi Schvei think he is th Rebbe or what? When the going gets weird, the weird get going.

R.schwei is speaking about L’fnin M’shuraas Ha’Din, above and beyond the letter of the law, so why does he not he himself act in such a matter, and keep himself busy with answering sha’alos, giving aitzes, being mis’asek in sholom bayis, chinuch etc ete, etc.

and leave all his personal/or klalisdike inyonim aside, since that is a major force for ruining our childrens chinuch, the rebbe’s community and the sholom of our chassidim!!

Let’s all get 2 things perfectly clear:

    1. Rabbi Schvei cannot simply appoint additional Rabbis to serve on a beis din. Rabbis Mangel and Bogomilisky are being used. They have no stature.

    2. This is all part of a plan to return Chanina Sperlin to be the Chair of the CHJCC. Or perhaps his mentor Leebush Nash.

When every member of the community would stand up and throw all of these letters, proofs, and garbage away, the message would be clear–WE are not interested in this as a community. Period. How long will this be a stumbling block for us?

Let us set the record straight.

Before Rabbi Shwei became Rabbi, Rabbi Osdoba only answered questions at 10:30 at night. Then only through a filter of an answering machine.

As a result there was basically no one answering questions. For Taharas hamispacha this was a disaster. The frum people went out of the shechuna. The others paskened for themselves.

Rabbi Shwei started to answer for many hours during the day. As a result Rabbi Osdoba was forced to add a little time during the day.

Rabbi Osdoba does not help with sholem bayis. Rabbi Shwei does.

Rabbi Osdoba rarely helps a poor person. It is almost impossible to get a letter from him (most respectable Rabbis in the world do give) a letter requesting help for a poor person.

Rabbi Shwei goes out of his way to help people, issuing letters and calling people to help others.

Everyone knows that Rabbi Shwei is always friendly and available. Can we say that about Rabbi Osdoba?

Why don’t we look at the facts?

Enough with the Machlokes. Ad Mosai.

Your "Shulcan Aruch" and "Halacha" keep on changing…!

    1) You pasken now that Rabbi Segal and the Vaad Hakoal do not have to appear at a Din Torah – even if it’s with a "Zabla" But why when Rabbi Krinsky and Shemtov were called to a Din Torah to a "Zabla" you "paskened" then that when summened to a "Zabla" one must alway come withot fail…!

    2) You "pasken" now that the plaintiffs in this case are regular laymen with no official capacity – so they have no right to summon anyone – who are you. But when regular laymen with no capacity "summoned" Rabbis Krinsky and Shemtov – you had no problem with that…!

Crown heights would be much better off were it not for the Brook/Osdoba hate filled postings on this webpage.

Its beautifull to see how they write that the Rebbe appointed Rabbi Osdoba. The Rebbe told US to elect Rabonim. The Rebbe didn’t appoint any Rov and Rabbi Schwei was appointed the same way with the same system that the Rebbe taught us to use for the election of Rabonim.

Just for the record: Rabbi Schwei received more votes than Rabbi Osdoba.

when VRL was created by the rebeb after the passing of zalmen shimon, VRl wanted to come out with a certain thing, so when they wrote in to the rebbe abotu it, the rebbe replied that since the beis din is still new people will wonder "mi boroh eilieh" and where did htey come from, therfore they shud instead wait till after some time to come out with the statment.
even without explainig the above, teh rebbe formed VRL, the rebeb referd to VRL many times, the rebbe insturcted shluchim to go to VRL for the lubavitch Din torahs. and wehn they came out with the tanis shaos teh rebbe had the paper in his siddur and folowed the whole paper. so if u hear a line of mi boro eileh, maybe u shud stop and think that maybe its taken out of context.

(He should not be able to sign any public letter, as he was not elected),
For Public questions that involves the Kohol, a larger Bais Din should sit, so as not to have factions.

According to the CH pashkvil sites…I mean news sites…the shchuna is a mess between the Vaad Hakohol/Rabbonim dispute and the continuing saga of 770. Frankly, I and many people I know do not know what side stands for what as far as the VHK/rabbonim are concerned, and 770 seems to be a wait and see situation regarding the court decision.

    What I do see is:

    1) Rising crime.

    2) Kingston Avenue is a dump and a slum shopping street, and we have not made any real inroads on Albany or Troy in terms of shops that attract human beings.

    3) Prices for kosher food and other products are way too high, especially in the dumps that pass for grocery stores in CH. Plenty of non pas yisroel baked goods are now sneaking into the shchuna thanks to our venal excuses for grocers who with 2 exceptions are basically among those I refer to in 6) below and could care less what we eat so long as they make cash on it.

    4) Kids going off the derech and not enough (ALIYA and YAM are a good start though) done to help them.

    5) An abysymal level of tznius.

    6) An influx of marginals who have come into the area; some are just plain nuts and some are kind of fellow travelers who may enjoy (taking advantage of) the community but whose standards are way below what Lubavitch and especially CH should stand for. They are not interested in being uplifted; they have something to sell to us at worst, and they are just coming along for the ride at best.

Now, the Vaad Hakohol is not doing enough about any of this; they are busy fighting about who knows what (probably money and power). It seems as if while perhaps the two rabbonim are fine individuals themselves, they are not able to work together for whatever reason and therefore there is no help coming from those quarters.

My question is – does anyone out there care and can we as grass roots residents of CH do anything about this? Or is it best to just go about our own lives (as I basically do), spend time with friends and business associates on our own levels – and let those who are sinking find a way out of their own mess? I know that the latter is not what the Rebbe wants, but can we fight the tides anymore?

I for one would like to see the baalei machlokes become completely isolated within the community; they should be pitied, not looked up to or even followed – WHO CARES what these jerks are up to. These politicians do not represent more than their cronies and those who need their crooked favors – they can all jump in the tashlich pond and no one would miss them. But can anyone do anything better or is it just the nature of community politics to attract these kinds of menuvelach?

Alternately, does it pay to meet with one of the present activists and get him to start representing the silent majority – or the minority who cares if that is what it is? Maybe one is better than the other after all, or maybe giving one of them a real, grass roots power base is the way to go.

During this time they could perhaps give Shiurim here in CH, spend time learning themselves and perhaps travel to other communities to speak and lecture.

This will increase the respect the community has for them and will allow our beautiful community to grow and flourish. It will also be a great example for our youth who will see that Rabbonim can put aside personal differences for the sake of the greater good.

Its sad to see 2 sides fighting against each other. Personaly I would love to see Rabbi Segal become Rov in Crown Heights but not on the Cheshbon of Rabbi Schwei. I think Rabbi Schwei is a real Chosid and great Rov. Rabbi Schwei is always available for shailos etc. Always serving the klal with a smile. I personally think he is a beautifull person and I dont want him geting hurt by Rabbi Segal although I believe Rabbi Segal to be a great candidate for Rov.

    Just my opinion.

Sholom’s initial point is very true: "WITH RABBI HELLERS CONSENT WE HAVE TO FILL HIS PLACE WITH A THIRD ACTIVE ROV."
No vacuum is good. The lack of a third active Rov (with the best reasons in the world) has created the untenable positions we are in now.
Sholom’s suggestion to wait for the two active Rabbonim to make peace is a chimera, a mirage. It will not happen. So the solution is to work around this fact and elect rabbonim who will be active and of equal power. In their new positions force a peaceful resolution to this machlokes within the Bais Din behind closed doors without involving the whole community.
That is why more rabbonim are necessary. And it is up to the community to elect the right Rabbonim for the job

  • 118. intresting wrote:

Statistics based completely on my own opinions and observations
In my statistics the term Lubavitchers equals all who claim to be chassidim.
15% of Lubavitchers don’t believe the Rebbe is Moshiach
85% of Lubavitchers believe the Rebbe is Moshiach.
60% of Lubavitchers say Yechi (privately or publicly).
60% of Lubavitchers believe that we should not publicize that the Rebbe is Moshiach.
20% of Lubavitchers believe the Rebbe is in a Guf and will not go to the Ohel.
5% of Lubavitchers believe nothing happened on Gimmel Tammuz.

Who is called anti, who is called mishachist? Aren’t both those terms extreme. Mishachists mistakenly believe that if you dont say yechi than you think the Rebbe is not Moshiach and Antis mistakenly believe that if you say Yechi you believe that nothing happened on Gimmel Tammuz. These beliefs do not necessarily go hand in hand. I think alot of the hate and hurt is by making two sides one against the other.
What I have observed that there isn’t just two different sides, anit and mishichist but actually there are a variety of different opinions. And there are some people who say Yechi yet don’t agree to screaming it or publicizing it. And there are some people who don’t say Yechi but believe 100% that the Rebbe is Moshiach. So lets stop categorizing people, lets stop arguing and realize we have alot more in common than we think.

I have been asked, "Are you a mishachist?" Being that I dont say Yechi out loud I reply in the negative. Then when they ask me if I believe the Rebbe is Moshiach they are shocked when I say "Of Course" Alot of people who dont say Yechi believe this way.

I have also met some people, who say Yechi with their children at night, who sing it at a farbrengen. But until I experienced shabbos with their family I would have never known because they dont publicize it. There are quite a few who believe this way.

I believe that a majority of Lubavitchers believe in one of the above opinions.
So we have alot more in common than we think, ehh?
So stop fighting and see what you have in common with the other person.

I have also noticed that alot more men than women get involved in politics. I have seen two men who completely don’t agree or get along because of politics and you know something? Their wives are best of friends! I heard that there was once a big arguement during simchas torah at the end of Hakofos, (yellow flags in shul or not). One lady stood up and announced to all the other women, "Everyone, GET YOUR HUSBANDS AND GO HOME!" The women listened:the fight was over and everyone was gone in less than five minutes!

Learn from the women of the generation, it was bzchus nashim tzidkoniyos that we went out Mitzrayim and the women will bring us out of this Galus too! Just one more act of loving kindness will bring Moshiach. We want Moshiach now!
