For many years, Rabbi Col. Fishel Jacobs has served as Chabad’s emissary to Israel’s prisons, where he visits incarcerated Jews and provides them with refreshments, words of encouragement and the opportunity to perform several Mitzvos. The following is an excerpt from his soon-to-be-released memoir, titled Coffee Melts Bars, in which he recounts a Yom Kippur encounter with a hulking middle-aged Russian-Jewish convict named Boris.

Shliach Thanks Minister for Israel-Belarus Visa-Waiver

To mark the visa-waiver for Israelis traveling to Belarus and Belarusians traveling to Israel, Sofa Landver, Israel’s Minister of Immigrant Absorption, visited the Belarus capital of Minsk. Landver visited the Jewish community and met with the city’s Chief Rabbi Shneur Deitch, who described a city that enjoys peaceful relationship between its minority Jewish community and broader population.

Winn-Dixie Hosts ‘Challahpalooza’

Chabad of Tamarac, FL, teamed up with the local Winn-Dixie store to host a “Challahpalooza Family Fest” in preparation for Rosh Hashanah. About two-hundred people came out to sample foods from the store’s kosher deli, as well as taking part in a hands-on challah-making activity, holiday-themed arts-and-crafts and interactive storytelling.
