Shomrim Members Graduate the City’s First CERT Course

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The course which consisted of eleven classes, two and a half hours each, had 25 attendants which included 17 Shomrim members. They received training from fire fighters in handling small fires, stabilizing victims and light search and rescue.

Attending the graduation was personal from the Office Of Emergency Management, directors of the CERT Program as well as our 71st Precinct’s Commanding Officer, Deputy Inspector Frank Vega. The course was sponsored by our Community Board 9’s chairperson R. Yaakov Goldstein and district manager Mrs. Pearl Miles, who had both attended the graduation.
