Homes Evacuated After Water Main Breaks

Water shot stories into the high, at one point up to 50 feet, so forceful it uprooted a tree, after a huge main break occured on Albany Avenue in the northern section of Crown Heights, forcing dozens of people from their homes before dawn.

The incident occurred just before 5:00am on Albany Ave. near Pacific Street in Crown Heights. Video from the scene showed water shooting up into the air like a geyser.

At least two buildings were evacuated as water flooded the street. Three hours later, it was spouting just as ferociously. The water main was finally capped just before 8:00am, 1010 WINS reported.

Debris damaged a number of cars — blowing out their windows, and thousand pound dumpsters were tossed into the air like it was nothing.

As a result of the break, there are closures on Pacific Street and Albany Avenue. Drivers should consider alternate routes.
