Anti-Semitic Slur on Publically Viewable Wi-Fi Hotspot

A CrownHeights.info reader observed a nasty anti-Semitic slur in the form of a publicly visible wi-fi hotspot while searching for an internet connection in the heart of Jewish Crown Heights.

The offending wi-fi hotspot, named “F***ingSmellyJews,” was observed near The Marketplace, a kosher supermarket on Kingston Ave.

The reader contacted the 71st Precinct to report it as a possible hate crime, but the police informed him that although it is in poor taste, the slur does not violate any law and is in fact protected by the first amendment.

    My life is poorer for having read this. I really needed to know that some goy doesn’t like him some yidden and named his wi-fi accordingly. If everything like this went reported we’d have no time for Drudge.

    The network is open. Connect to the network and assuming it’s a Linksys wifi router try browsing to 192.168.1.1. If user did not change the router default credentials, you should be able to login as “admin” and password “admin” without the quotes. Go ahead and change the SSID to SmellyHipsters.

    Another idiot who has no idea what the term “hate crime” means. Seriously, how can anyone have got the idea that hating people is a crime? This is America, we are free to feel however we like, and to say whatever we like. Nobody has to like anyone, and everyone is free to express their opinions, no matter how unpopular. If you don’t like what someone says, you are equally free to say so, but how can you imagine the police should get involved? How does such ignorance exist?

    Simpler solution.
    Log into hotspot, go to illegal websites, download some Movies/TV shows and let the guy get busted for that

      No, no, very bad idea. You cannot know what is behind that wifi set up, there is no reason to assume that a mac address which uniquely identifies your device isn’t being recorded by the maintainer along with a list of the websites your machine has requested. As long as you are visiting https sites you are probably safe from packet injection but if not you open yourself up to man in the middle type stuff.

      You simply ignore it and move on my friend. getting back at people what hate Jews makes wack a mole look like investing in the google IPO.

    Not that I’m saying that free speech isn’t protected, but I wonder if the law enforcement response would be the same if the SSID would be LGBT_are_sickos or something about blacks?

      Probably would be the same.

      But boy, it would hit social media and the location would be triangulated and that guy would be identified and go viral in a bad bad way. The NYTimes would op-ed about it and the animal in chief would probably darshan on it pronto.

      Of course it woudl be. What makes you even wonder about it? Even if the police really wanted to do something about it, what do you think they could do, without breaking the first amendment and losing their houses and pensions in a civil rights lawsuit?
