Writing Begins on New Sefer Torah for Nosson’s Shul

In the aftermath of the tragic passing of 21 year old Nosson Deitsch two years ago, his classmates established a shul in Crown Heights that bears his name. “Nosson’s Shul” quickly grew into a vibrant hub for learning and davening, with minyonim, shuirim, farbrengens and one-on-one learning taking place on Shabbos and throughout the week.

While Nosson’s Shul is housed in spacious and inviting premises and boasts a fine stock of seforim, the shul has been missing one very important ingredient. Until now Nosson’s Shul has not had its own Sefer Torah.

On Nosson’s birthday, 19 Sivan, a group of Nosson’s friends came to the conclusion that the time has come to write a Sefer Torah in his memory. A few days later, on the Thursday before Gimmul Tammuz, a large crowd of bochurim and yungerlite gathered to begin writing the new Sefer Torah.

For Nosson’s friends the occasion aroused tremendous feelings. The memory of Nosson, with his trademark smile, will always bring to mind good and happy times, and by the same token is accompanied by a deep sense of loss.

Nosson’s shul was founded to provide a place that will somehow continue Nosson’s legacy and his joyful enthusiasm for yiddishkeit and chasidishkeit. In that spirit the evening concluded with a farbrengen in honor of Gimmel Tammuz, led by Rabbi Mendel Lipsker, Shliach to Sherman Oaks, CA.

If you would like to join in preserving Nosson’s memory you are welcome to participate. For more information, or to make a donation, please click here, or email torah@nossonsshul.com.

I’m not K”V knocking anything specific, this just seems an appropriate posting to ask a question. For 1,000s of years Yidden named shuls only for concepts, Chevra Shas, Chevra Thilim, Ksav Sofer, Ahavas Moishe … since when did Lubavitch start naming Shuls after people? Does anyone else do this?

This is the most beautiful Shul. The Rabbi encourages young mnen who might not go to shul to daven and be involved. I am happy to have such a worthy place to give tzedekah and do whatever I can. Yasher Koach

To #6: Naming people after people is a custom with which I’m familiar. Shuls have always been organized around Living Jewish concepts and activities. I clearly said I wasn’t commenting specifically on this Shul. There’s Beis Shmuel, Yossi Raichik Shul, Itchik’s Shteebl, Getzle’s Shul and on and on … and I asked when Lubavitch started naming Shul’s after people and if anyone else does this.

you make it sound like those who daven there are guys who would otherwise bichlal not be going to shul.

not true, come in any shabbos you’ll see that the group of guys who call this shul home are all different, true some not ultya chasidish, but the bulk of them are chassidisher working bocuhrim and ungerleit, not really like a sort of chevra ahavas yisrol that you make it sould like.

    to #6…
firstly, you are n immature, unintelligent and rude individual,
secondly, #5 was simple asking a question, no one was questioning the integrity of the Shule.

Your OVERreaction and comment and calling #5 a ‘shvantz’ shows the Nosson had no affect on YOU…
