Cops Accused of Issuing Tickets as Revenge

Residents of St. Marks Avenue in Crown Heights are saying that police are giving them parking tickets as payback, after an officer was hurt by a bicycle that was dropped on his head last weekend.

From News 12:

Residents say about 20 cars have gotten tickets in the past two days along Saint Marks Avenue between Albany and Kingston Aves. “I’m holding a ticket given to me yesterday for a missing plate, but I have both plates on my car,” said one resident.

Area residents say the ticketing is because of an incident that happened at 959 Saint Marks Ave. early Sunday morning. Police were in the neighborhood investigating a shooting when someone from the fifth floor allegedly threw a bicycle off the balcony, hitting an officer on the head and severely injuring him.

One resident claims that when he asked an officer why he got a ticket, the officer allegedly responded that it was “payback time.”

  • That area is usually a ticket free zone

What should I say? When I drive around the northern side of Easter Parkway I am always flabbergasted and jealous at how cars are parked and left undisturbed for half an hour before and after alternate parking hours.

On our side of Eastern Parkway, one is lucky if the ticket agent isn’t writing a summons for double parking before the time is over. For which we have absolutely no recourse, as allowing us to double park is only an official “courtesy.”

while i feel bad for the cop whom got a bike on his head..obviously the person who did this is a animal.

however that doesnt give the right for cops to act like this. todays cops thats all their good for.

Shameful accusation. The hardworking and honest cops in the NYPD would never do this.

I know, I met both of them.

    Can’t be.
    The cops are “OUR FRIENDS”…….
    (Want to buy a bridge?)

    • abuse

not when they abuse people. Punishing the nocent people who haven’t done anything wrong is not policing

With great gifts comes great responsibility.
If you have the presence of a dedicated NYPD trailer 365-6/24 at Kingston and EP, and street policing all hours of the day and night throughout your community, then you shouldn’t complain if the officers perform within the full scope of their duties. The gift you receive comes fully delivered by “Brooklyn South” policing. When you go “north” of EP, then you are in “Brooklyn North”. The law-abiding citizens of each neighborhood get the government that they can “pay” for. When the government bites, everyone complains. Some who are richer, complain louder. Would you be willing to trade the level of police support?

Boo hoo. Did any of these folks cooperate with the police to identify their neighbor who threw the bike? Don’t want a ticket? Park legally and keep your plates on your car and your registration and inspection stickers current.

What proof do you have of this? And why wouldn’t you ask about the condition of the injured officer? And if people would park correctly, maybe they wouldn’t get tickets!

My point exactly. The neighbors, when not in immediate fear of their lives, have cooperated with the police. And as for parking correctly, as I stated, when you haven’t followed the traffic laws, you will be cited. The video posted on this website showed that the complainants said that they were in compliance with the law (they had both of their license plates on their vehicles, properly displayed).
So when persons within the 77th or 71st precincts park improperly, they should be cited, stop their whining, and pay their fines. (That means both communities).
The precinct commander has stated that he has addressed this problem both internally and externally. The increase in policing was requested by law-abiding citizens living on that block. I know; I personally saw them do this. Hope this clears up any questions you have about the quality of the majority of the citizens living “north”.
I have noticed in the past two years that there have been serious questions about the quality of citizens in your communities, whether in Crown Heights or dispersed throughout the borough. It would be ignorant on my part to ascribe base qualities to your entire community, based on the actions of a small number. Or have the rules of basic humanity in the universe changed?

Oh by the way, I did ask about the health and safety of all four officers who were at the scene. I asked Deputy Inspector Eddie Lott, commander of the 77th Precinct.
