Thieves Rob, Attempt to Rape Crown Heights Woman

Last night at about 9:00pm, a young Jewish woman was walking in Crown Heights when she was accosted by three African-American males, who threw her to the ground, covered her mouth and began to tug off her skirt.

The incident occurred on Carroll St. between Troy and Schenectady Ave.

The girl realized what they were trying to do; she pulled her mouth free and begged them to just take her belongings and leave her alone.

Thankfully, the perpetrators acceded. They grabbed her shoulder bag, and made off.

After recovering slightly from the shock of what had transpired, the girl called Shomrim, who arrived quickly.

Her bag and glasses were found discarded at the end of the block – near Schenectady Ave. Her money, credit cards, camera, iPod and cell phone were all missing.

Shomrim then took her to the 71st precinct, where she filed a criminal report. The police refused to categorize the crime as attempted rape, despite the girl’s insistence that they had attempted to do so.

    We definitely need cameras, but before that – what about some more street lights? That block is one of the darkest blocks in crown heights – I’m always scared when I walk down it. There are many blocks in crown heights that c ould use much better lighting.

    On another note, it is very strange that thugs would attempt rape right in the middle of the street. This is the first time I have ever heard of such a thing. Usually it is indoors or in an alley or something.

    It’s not reasonable to expect the police to patrol every corner of crown heights. It’s time for us to take responsibility for ourselves. We have shomrim and we’re very fortunate. But we need more. We need a community patrol. We need men on every corner, and one in the middle on the long blocks. We need “safe houses” – clearly labeled Jewish houses with bright lights where people know they can run to for help. Especially now, with winter upon us, there will be more hours of dark. Who can arrange something like this?

    Just like you walk down the street with your thumb always on your iPhone, if you are a girl walking at night in CrownHeights, you should get used to holding a Mace can in your pocket or bag, just for the walk to/from wherever you are going. It could save your life, AND possibly prevent these animals from trying it again on someone else.

    Anybody who has a car should volunteer their time to patrol the streets for at least an hour a day.
    Also, those who can afford it should put up video cameras wherever they can. Videos can make a very big difference in raising awareness and are very often helpful in catching the criminals.

    Every person who enjoys freedom to walk and be part of a community – man, woman, youth – should take a few hours of organized self-defence courses. There are simple techniques to learn, like a swift kick to the knees, kick in the groin, yes some tools like alarms help too, but ultimately why not organize self-defence classes. If you walk strong and with confidence knowing anyone who messes with you (with a gun excepting) is going to be lying on the ground in pain, you are less likely to be assaulted. Come on Yid’n.     Let’s be reasonable, the Police cannot be everywhere at the same time. But we as citizens can do things to make this community a safer place.

    We are fortunate to have very efficient patrol groups in our community, and we must help them out. We can do it either financially or by volunteering. Also, those with the means should install cameras around their homes and businesses.

    I also think that more respect towards the cops won’t hurt us and will lead to better cooperation.

    To all those calling for self defense, yes it’s helpful, but only to a point. As soon as you are outnumbered – it’s useless. One guy to one guy – it might help. One guy to two or more?     it would be nice if you had people armed with and trainned on the proper usage of guns. However, you have a Mayor that believes that criminals have more rights then law abididing citizens and anyone who has a gun is a criminal especially if he uses it in self-defense.     Having said that what can we do especially if we are not going to start shooting people. First, learn self defense and learn how to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and what to do in that case. Second, there are presonal weapons that you can obtain to protect your self such as mace,an oriental hand fighting stick, a tazer. Third, there is the buddy system especially if you are out at night or a possible questionable street. Fourth, if there are no lights, bug the heck out of your council man to get them for safety sake. And, finally put all the pressure you can and even in a voting to elect personnel that will not favor the criminal over the victu.

    Get 6 MEN on every block. 2 on each cornor and 2 in the middle…. From 6 PM – 6 AM … you will cut down a lot. Each MAN on Each Block… Must be a Shomer 2 nights a week.

    to #5: EVERY teenage girl should be educated as to what sexual assault is, how to identify and avoid the risk factors, and how to defend herself if all else fails, G-d forbid. IF SOMEONE IS EVER ATTACKED THEY MUST FIGHT BACK! The fact that this young woman screamed contributed to her surviving this attack without being raped. Hiding this info from your teen is not part of the solution – it is part of the problem!

  • Safety Tips

    1. Never walk while speaking on your cell phone. If you need to make a call, stop into a safe environment and stand with your back to a wall – this prevents the possibility of someone surprising you from behind. Don’t walk on the street with headphones. You can’t hear someone coming up behind you.
    2. Always have your keys in your pocket as you approach your door. Don’t be that girl that has to fish for her keys!
    3. Carry some sort of “weapon” on your keychain. Whether it is a whistle, flashlight, personal alarm, it is ready to use! If you choose to carry pepper spray, practice how to use it. Using a weapon in the time of a crisis is not the time to learn how it works.
    4. Always open doors using your shoulder so you can glance over your other shoulder to look who is behind you. Use the reflection in shop windows to keep an eye on what is going on behind you.
    5. Never allow anyone in your personal space that does not have permission to be there!
    6. Never stand in the back of the elevator, trapping yourself. Stand near the buttons where you are in control.
    7. Try to consolidate your bags into one big bag. Always keep your hands free to use.
    8. Pay Attention, make eye contact. If you let them know “I see you” you are telling them I can pick you out of a line-up.
    9. Do not be afraid to use your VOICE. It is the best weapon you have!
    10. If someone mugs you for your wallet, jewelry, bag: Always throw it passed them so they turn to get it and you can run the other way.

From the leadership, parents on down, you MUST make a policy that not one young woman should be out alone. I don’t care if she is walking next door. When I was stationed at Fort Jackson, initially there were many assaults on females….once they put into policy that no female could be out alone, the numbers went way, way down. Married, single, not one of you young ladies should go out alone.

    It is disturbing that parents would not want to educate their children about the existence of rape in any community. That goes for sexual abuse too. There is no age at which a child is not exposed to the potential for being abused. This has been shown to be true in every community and in every school. Oh yes, I’m talking about Orthodox Jewish schools and Orthodox communities too. Who would you rather have explain rape and abuse to your child? The school counselor or police officer after it happens, or yourself as a parent before it happens as a way to prevent it from happening?
