More Shomrim members arrived on scene in order to stop them and police were called. In the meantime the two men pleaded with Shomrim members not to call police and immediately began cleaning up the garbage they dumped and put it back into their car.

From the law:It shall be unlawful for any person, their agent, employee, or any person under their control to suffer or permit any dirt, sand, gravel, clay, stone rocks, rubbish, building rubbish, sawdust, shavings or trade or household waste, refuse, ashes, manure, garbage, rubbish or debris of any sort or any other organic or non-organic material or thing other offensive matter being transported in a dump truck or other vehicle to be dumped, deposited or otherwise disposed of in any street, lot, park, publicity or privately owned.
-Section I6-119 of the Administrative Code
of the City of New York

Police officers arrived on scene shortly after being called and had stopped the car and asked the driver some questions and requested to see his driver’s license and inspected the contents in the car, in the meantime more officers arrived on scene but after a few minutes of talking to the suspects the officers let them go, no summonses were issues or arrests made.

An outraged resident told CrownHeights.info that this isn’t the first time that residents in the area of Clove Rd. have been suffering from these illegal dumpers, one resident said that she had just gotten pulled over by patrol car 1474 for a seatbelt violation, which she said she did indeed deserve, but pointing at the car that was used to do the illegal dumping she pointed out how there isn’t a single marker light on the car intact and simply driving that ‘thing’ was a hazard to the road sine they were driving with the trunk hatch open and derbies could have fallen out onto other cars. ‘Why can’t they target the really dangerous offenders?’ she asked.

A construction worker that was in the area during this incident commented on how the police simply let them go with out actually dealing with the matter appropriately.

After doing some research I came up with a number of resources on how to handle the problem with illegal dumping and came up with a number of websites:

Department of Sanitation’s Illegal Dumping Bounty Programs – Click Here

New York City Park Advocates – Click Here

And an interesting article published in the New York Times on October 3, 1989 about the Environmental Protection Agency suing the City of New York for $100,000 over spilling raw sewage and sludge into the east river – Click Here

  • BrookAve

Would dumping some of those yummy Rubashkin hot dogs on that lot be considered illegal? Pass the kraut.

  • CPR???

You can really feel the CPR- Courtesy, Professional and Respect The police have for our Community, when some outsides come to bump garbage they get away, while any member of our community just take a burp or drops a tissue (I.e.) does a lesser crime –which in must cases does not harm any body else) the police are all over it – CAR 1474 (the car that never misses a beat/ticket).

  • streets clean

do we really care if there is a bit of garbage on the street either way it will be cleaned up by the city, so there is no reason to make such a big deal about it.
