Wheel Thieves Strike Again: Carroll and Kingston

After a hiatus of several months, the wheel thieves are back in business.Their latest victim: a brand-new Honda Accord parked on Carroll Street between Kingston and Albany Avenues, whose wheels were stolen in middle of the night and the car’s body left resting on crude cinderblocks.

These brazen thefts have been plaguing the Crown Heights community in recent years, devastating vehicle owners all over the neighborhood. The targeted cars have been mostly new and in the upper range, though some older and cheaper vehicles have fallen victim as well.

Be sure to protect your vehicle in as many ways as possible so you do not become a victim. Anti-theft lug nuts and car tilt alarms are two examples of relatively simple safety measures that can be added to a vehicle.

Remember, even if an added security measure isn’t 100% foolproof, it will still likely deter thieves from targeting your car and cause them to move on to an easier target.

Looks like a jack under the right side of the car. Couldn’t they lift prints off it?

From first hand personal experience I will tell you that finding a criminal by ‘lifting prints’ is a MYTH.

It just doesn’t happen (or very rarely does) in the real world. Surface needs to be clean and smooth, hands need to be dirty, and most importantly no smudges, which almost never happens.

If you’ve ever been fingerprinted, you know how hard your fingers need to press against the media recording your prints (paper or digital), and how string your fingers are held by the technician to avoid smudges.

The practical use of fingerprints is only in comparing two sets of prints. I.e. if a person is fingerprinted for a certain reason, those prints might be matched against a database of prints that were taken under other circumstances.
