Three off-duty police officers were arrested and charged with assault yesterday after they attacked a man who had broken into a car belonging to one of them, officials said.

The man accused of breaking into the car, Alcado Gasper, 47, of Park Slope, Brooklyn, suffered minor injuries in the attack, which took place in Park Slope, and received medical treatment after he was arrested and taken to the 78th Precinct station house, officials said.

Officers Greg Abrahams, 33; Mark Zajac, 25; and Chris Kirch, 27, were all charged with third-degree assault and are under investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau, the police said.

The confrontation started about 2:30 a.m. on Lincoln Place, the police said, when two officers on patrol reported seeing Mr. Gasper break into a car that belonged to Mr. Abrahams, a sergeant in the 71st Precinct with 12 years on the force.

Mr. Abrahams, Mr. Zajac and Mr. Kirch, who were off duty, arrived at the car and began fighting with Mr. Gasper, the police said. The three officers were arrested at 6 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Zajac and Mr. Kirch, also assigned to the 71st Precinct, have been on the force for four years.

Mr. Gasper was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief and attempted auto theft.

so theyre off duty…means that they should leave the perp there? what type of country do we live in??!
    PEOPLE wake uP!!!

  • ISchier

UNBELIEVABLE! Stop a crime against your own property and face assault charges? The cops deserve medals and overtime pay.

re what ” a girl wrote ”’ … off duty or on duty does NOT give permission for an officer to use force without a reason .. they could have restrained him some how some way .. does not sound like extreme force was needed form what is being reported here … being an officer does not give officer perimission to loose control of one self more then any other person .. why are civilians held accountable for their actions when we get upset though an officer may do as they please ??

  • NoMoreTrust

Wow! They don’t even take care of there own, you expect them to take care of use?
I wonder if they have any connections in the Precinct ;)

It’s a sick world. People are only looking out for them self’s, can’t trust anybody anymore. There is to comradely between anybody, it’s each for his own, Pretty sad.

  • Kirsh = Bad cop

That Cop is a real SHMUK… He allways harrased people for no good reason! I hope he never walks the street again! BH BH BH

    We need Giuliani back!

What kind of upside-down society are we living in when the police are arrested for apprehending a criminal? What kind of message does this send to the other low-life’s? With this upside-down version of justice how can the law abiding citizens hope to lead a peaceful existence?

  • Peretz

These 71 Pct. cops should be cleared by Internal Affairs. They did what any normal American should do. To bust them is immoral. I hope that this was a mistake.

    To ISchier:

    Dont you see the point?!
Last friday night 10 windows were busted in CH, did the police do anything? how long was Derrick Nelson locked up for?!
But when its THEIR car, WHOOO! Beat the guy! if only some Yidden could do that! (and not get caught of course)

  • random.bochur

go on to youtube and type “police brutality” in the search bar. see for yourself. literally. abuse of power doesnt make the police evil; it does demand a serious system of checks and balances so it remains clear who are the good guys and who the bad.

  • concerned

of course they can’t beat them up, they weren’t being attacked. When they were perfectly capable of holding the guy down until the on duty police came, then why show that the police can do whatever they feel like doing?
I agree with Yisroel up at the top.

  • PROUD TO BE IN THE USA

HAHAHA COPS GET LOCKED UP FOR BRAKING INTO SERGENTS CAR WE NEED LESS SHMUCKS IN THE NYPD IAB NEEDS TO LOOK INTO WHAT THEY ARE HIRING. AND DO SOME FIRING.

The cops are not responsible for Dreck Nelson’s revolving door sentence. I know for a fact that they are fed up with him and another lowlife named Armstrong who have been responsible for breakins since they were young teenagers.

The judge who sentenced him is at fault and/or is working with ridiculous sentencing guidelines. Unfortunately, the lowest of the low, the 5th generation welfarians who sympathize with Dreck Nelson and hate us, have a lot of time on their hands and they tend to vote in every municipal election. That is why the Dreck Nelsons of NYC get off with 90 days.

As for nothing being done about window breaking, more of us need to show up at the precinct council meetings and/or make other contacts with the 71st. The black people who show up are not in any way the troublemakers, but they are loud and outnumber us 50:1. They also live and have businesses on blocks where there are no Anash. Our precinct covers a lot of ground and resources are not infinite – if we do not make our voices heard we will be ignored. Not right, I know, and also connected to voting patterns, but such is life.

And if we get nowhere with the 71st we need to start making contacts at 1 Police Plaza. That means us, not the sadly fragmented Community Council.

I am all for curbing police brutality and abuse of power , however in this incident I think the cops were COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED .I think they tried to arrest the car thief and he resisted and fought them, and they had to use force to subdue him.

To me , an example of unjustified force by the cops would be beating people up at a peaceful demonstration.

  • Seth from Brooklyn...

According to this article in the Post…the off duty policemen beat the criminal up after he was hand cuffed and arrested by the on duty police. The on duty police found the off duty police in a bar at a party…

As far as the suggestion that we need Giulianni back…remember that he gave us Bernie “the criminal” Kerik as police commissioner…the mayor surrounded himself with incompetant commissioners and had a bad reputation in our city until September 11th, 2001. Then he became “America’s Mayor” on the backs of all of the poor police, fire and ems people who were murdered by the terrorists…he is not a good person…

  • David

Seth, you are either blind or full of it
Guliani’s police commisioners were the best we ever had, including berni kerik, crime was at an all time low, all the low life non working garbage were packing up and leaving the city, more guns then ever were taken off the streets, i felt safe, now with the two losers in charge of the city, crime is up and poice work a failure

  • I LOVE THE NYPD

You know it is sad to see something unjust happen like this. I sit here and shake my head. They will be cleared over time and they will be back in action one day. I know the Crown Heights community will embrace them with open arms.
