Boy, 10, Attacked by Group of Black Youth

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A young Jewish boy was attacked this evening while on his way home. The victim, a 10 year old was returning home from Yeshivas Erev. At approximately 8:15pm he was accosted by a large group of black youths near the corner of Kingston Ave and Lefferts Ave. Without uttering any words, one of them threw a basketball at the boy. It struck his face, smashing his glasses and injuring him.

In pain and shock the boy quickly ran to his home, on Kingston and Maple. When he arrived home the boy’s parents called Shomrim who responded and began searching for the group. Unfortunately the victim was not able to remember anything about his assailants, aside from them being a group of over 5 black youths. A short search without the proper description yielded no results.

Police were called and responded along with EMS. EMS treated the boy for bruises and scratches on his face. The Police filed a report.

this is a crazy world by the way were are the police they are soposto be watching the streets

  • why?

The cops can’t be at all places at all times. Its up to the leaders of the black community to lead the youth in the right direction. Its a shame there is so much of this.

  • SAVE OUR KIDS!!

A 10 year old shouldn’t be walking on his own at that time in the dark, esp. having to go down those streets. I would say the same to my son coming to Crown & Kingston. Can’t he be walked home by an adult?

That said, we all know there’s no protection for our families. Why isn’t Brownstein in Simonetti’s office, thumping his desk & demanding better protection?

Does Brownstein exist? Is he real? we haven’t seen anything of him since those victory photos on Chanina’s faux-French reproduction couch.

  • LEFT, DROPPED OFF AT 770 BY NYPD

I HEARD THAT THIS PAST FRIDAY NIGHT ONE OF THE 800 STUDENTS WAS MUGGED AND BEATEN BY A GROUP OF 6 YOUNG BLACK TEENAGERS!!! SENDING HIM TO THE HOSPITAL WITH HATZOLAH.

  • ch mom

not to racial profile but basically for every group of young black men there should be a police man watching….because something like this is bound to happen.

  • Here-s what-s going to happen

and some member from the C.O.P. program will call the boys parents and ask them not to push the matter with the 71st, because it doesn’t look good on the statistic report. Oh, and it for sure wasn’t a “hate crime” or “anti-semitic” incident, no this was just a “simple random act.”

Yeah, and Mr. Clause delivers presents on Chanukah too.

Where are the cops? The community needs more cameras and emergency call boxes like college campuses have.

Plus, what is a 10 yr. old doing walking around in Brooklyn in the dark? Where were the parents?! The cops are not babysitters, people.

  • CH vigilante

today it’s a basketball tomorrow it’ll be worse. we gotta teach these gangsters a lesson – THE POLICE WON’T. In Williamburg and B.P. this would be dealt with accordingly v’hamaivin yavin…

  • Officer Charlie

Tonight, minutes after this attack occured, there was a women’s self defense program in ULY. There were several police officers there. Officer Charlie was leading the show and was very evasive on most questions asked of him. When one woman said that it took cops an hour and a half to respond after a 911 call, he was in shock that this could happen! Wake up and smell the coffee, Officer Charlie!! You said you’ve been at the 71st for 11 years. Well, you should know that there is nothing normal about this precinct and there is LOTS of room for improvement!

  • Facts

Kids should be walking home with an Adult, not because it is Normal but rather because this IS the Situation as of NOW!

In order for it to be safer area we need police that DO their JOB! NOT just more Police!

Why does everyone miss the point!?

Although we shouldn’t have to protect ourselves just like they don’t have to protect themselves…But that is the way it SHOULD be, but not the way it IS!

So instead of pointing fingers (between me and you, it doesn’t get us that far) WE should put something together for a while of ZERO TOLERANCE, and that hopefully will calm the Place down or Get the Police More Active.
(and if this doesn’t work lets think of something else, instead of putting each other down saying “Stupid Idea”…maybe give one! The main thing is that it WORKS and our Kids and Ourselves are Safe!)

put together a commettee of men who are willing to put in shifts of an hour at a time to police the streets. it should be mandatory unless have a good reason.
if there were 2000 volunteers – all split into short shifts to protect and oversee our streets, then a ten year old could walk home along kingston avenue at 8.15.

need to take the matter in our own hands.
each group has a device all have to do is press a button and will get support from other groups. they call in their number and all would know where the location to go is. other groups responding will call 911 (see how long they take to respond).

  • To Benjy

    Good morning to you

this already exists and has for the past 30+ yrs in CH started by the famous Yisroel ShemTov

when he was in charge it was more peacefull.

Now they are busy beating eachother up in court.

Neither can accept that the other is doing any good.

the interestign thing is that this is posted the same day as the letter from a CH mother regarding the Wolowik and Swerdlov kids

It doesn’t matter where you go in the world, everyone gets hurt. Kids regularly hurt each other whether physically and/or emotionally.

Perhaps there could be appointed yeshiva chaperones to walk children home when needed. Universities provide chaperones for students, so why not yeshivas?

What happened to him, though terrible, could have been much worse. Read the news. Children get abducted all the time and hurt in far worse ways. He -should- have had a guardian.

What alarms me is the amount of people I see walking at night or crossing the street wearing headphones, seemingly oblivious to what’s around them, avoiding eye contact. One should make eye contact not just in case something bad happens (so one can remember what they saw), but because letting someone know you see them CAN PREVENT an attack.

Parents need to practice and teach awareness, patience and safety to their children so they’re not walking alone, rushing across Eastern Parkway against traffic, etc.

I hope the child recovers well and no longer walks alone.

The world is not crazy, but some people are.

Cops can’t be and shouldn’t be everywhere.

Has nothing to do with Bloomberg or Thompson.

“Blacks” don’t have “leaders.” Black is the color of some people’s skin. People choose who they want to follow.

It is a shame there is any violence like this.

If you got a ticket a block away, you probably deserved it. Cops can’t be prophetic to know what WILL happen where.

815p is not an unreasonable time for a child to walk the street any more than 3pm. Should a 10 yr old ever walk the street alone? I don’t know.

This has nothing to do with better protection.

Why is Brownstein being singled out?

If another person was mugged several days ago by a group of teenagers, that is the same issue which is the focus here.

Yes, muggers should be locked up. But where, and to what end?

To say “not to racial profile but…every group of young black men…should {have} a police man watching” is almost as bad as mugging someone.

I don’t know what “push the matter with the 71st {precinct}” means, but the article says a report was filed already

(and yes, Mr. Clause does deliver presents on Chanukah).

More cameras would be good, and that’s right, cops are not babysitters, but they are there to prevent muggings and catch perpetrators.

Vigilantism may be good if well tragetted, meaning if you catch the perpetrators red-handed and mete out justice there and then, I’m all for it. But if you can’t ID the “gangsters” that’s hurt the first “gangster” you find, that’s mugging just the same.

What occurs in the 71st precinct and in many heavily populated, mixed group neighborhoods, is the focus of the matter.

Who determines what exactly the job of a cop is?

What exactly is Zero Tolerance if you don’t know who did the crime? Saying we need to think of something is enlightening?

Interesting idea to have community patrols, but controlling and managing the patrols is a bigger challenge than catching muggers. Just re-read comments and think what some volunteer patrols would do. Every block could have their own shifts, but adhering to what the protocol should be if trhere is an issue is the challenge. And are YOU ready to take a 2-4am shift once a week?

Yisroel ShemTov still does his thing when he can. He’s just one man, though (and was never “in charge”).

Besides the fact that it is impossible for Yeshivos to copver the neighborhood with chaperones, why is it a Yeshiva issue? Halev-eye they should do their job of educating during school hours. The streets are everyone’s issue.

What kind of eye contact are you recommending!?

Parents do need to practice and teach awareness, patience and safety to their children so they’re not walking alone, rushing across Eastern Parkway against traffic, etc. but that has nothing to do with a basketball thrown in your face.

    So.

    I say –

    1. There should be more cameras, put in a way that everyone knows they are there.
    2. Considering the current state of affairs, people should reconsider whether they really should have their 10 year olds walking alone, ever.
    3. Mugging, like terrorism, like most violent crime, is an evil, inescapable by-product of living with some sick people. It should be dealt with immediately, strongly, if possible. But if the bad guy gets away we should not increase the ugliness by contributing ourselves to it, nor stop living normally.
    4. I don’t know the answer to why and when evil gets away with evil, but not every question has an answer. Sometimes there is an answer and sometimes there is not. Deal with what you can. Don’t spin your wheels.

    to tee ess:

u should be elected as new york president! ill be first to vote!!!
    good luck!

Adult or not, 10 teenagers could hurt both an adult and a 10 year old. It is not 10 year old fault so there is no reason to talk about the adult presence. It is fault of those people who hurt him, they should be dealt with. I think it is time for self defence classes in every cheder.

  • Blessings to all

The world is a different place then when we grew up, walking alone at the age of 10 in the dark, not great, walking alone even at age 15 or 16 still not great. I walk my kids or they don’t go (I’m a single parent so extra hard to enforce this and yes the teenagers challenge this every time, rule still apply’s) or option 2. I see their friends at my door steps they are walking with, numbers are good, G-d for bid something happens one of the kids will see or recognize something, kids walking alone not a risk to take these days unfortunately and in this demographic.

Tee ess it is great to have straight forward information, you took the time to say many things that many can benefit from. Blessings, safety, protection and Good Mazal (luck) in all areas to all of us. From those who protect us to those who look out for us and those who pray for us….And those tuff enough to enforce rules and laws….We have to work together as a community implementing new solutions for the ever changing world we live in.

  • rifhah

It is a problem, but its a problem that we each have to deal with, most efficiently and practically on an individual basis.

If there are no adults available to escort the child all the way, then have the child walk part way to a safe spot, for example in this case, till Empire and Kingston and then be met by a parent.

Nowadays cell phones are cheap and if the child could carry one responsibly then they could call when arriving at the designated spot.

Walking alone, after it gets dark should be avoided at any age.

It is sad that a boy got attacked and may be traumatized for years to come, but it C”V could have been worse, as should be considered a wake-up call to all of us who are parents.

Bottom-line IT IS NOT SAFE TO BE WALKING ALONE WHEN DARK

This is an awful incident to read of, and it saddens me to hear of this happening to someone so young, let alone happening at all. The level of mindless aggression, angst and ignorance in this area infuriates me.

But please understand, police officers are meant to be a supplement in crime prevention, not the sole source.

The first step in crime prevention is diligence and common sense . You do not leave your doors unlocked and open, and then blame officers for not being there when your home is robbed. Likewise, it is inadvisable to have a young child of any race, in any neighborhood, walking the streets after dark by themselves. Even if its just to cross the street.

When i was a young black youth growing up in the Bronx, my mother took me to and from school far beyond the point where my friends made fun of me for it. Nonetheless, my involvement in undesirable altercations were pretty much nonexistent. best wishes to you all.

  • EXCELLENT PARENTING!!!!

What great parenting!!! We all know what the streets are like and this kid was allowed to be walking alone by himself at 8:15pm with no adult supervision!!!!
It could have been way worse. He could have been abducted by some sick child snatcher. Why blame the police when obviously the parents don’t care enough for their child.
I can guarantee my children don’t walk by themselves at night.
