Shomrim Locates Missing 6-Year-Old Boy

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A frantic mother called the Shomrim hotline after her six-year-old boy, who has down syndrome, had vanished after she took her eyes off him for just a minute.

The call was received at around 4:45pm Tuesday.

The boy had been sitting on the couch and watching a children’s video, when he vanished from the Crown Street and Albany Avenue home.

Dozens of Shomrim volunteers responded to the scene and immediate began searching for the child, who was reported to also have trouble speaking.

Concerned for his safety, Shomrim immediately notified the Police and Hatzalah, and within minutes had nearly 100 volunteers searching nearby schools, parks and stores.

A short while into the search a Jewish man walked over and notified Shomrim that the boy was located a few blocks away, and that he was safe. Searchers quickly made their way over and, once confirming it was the missing boy, returned him to his grateful mother.

Shomrim later found out that a woman had noticed the boy walking by himself and took him into a nearby doctor’s office, where other individuals sprung into action and helped reunite the boy with his mother.

The mother thanked Shomrim and the police officers for their effort in locating her son.

“Shomrim is here to help, but often we rely on assistance from the public we seek to help” said a Shomrim coordinator after the search, adding: “if you see a missing child, or anything of concern, don’t hesitate to call the Shomrim Hotline at (718) 774-3333 and notify us.”

  • Similar happened to me

B”H, found safe, hopefully never in danger, but, getting lost is certainly never safe. Never know…

Anyway, when I was about 2 years old (not really walking that good), in our backyard, my mother turned around to do something. When she turned back around, she could not find me. Finally, she looked up, and there I was climbing the ladder right to the roof! She was afraid to holler or anything lest I get scared and… CH”V. Finally I reached my hand over the roof, and my father, who was working up there, said, “My heart was in my mouth!” So, he crawled over and got me.
