Baltimore City Hall Menorah Unveiled

Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, director of the Jewish Uniformed Service Association, unveiled the new Baltimore City Hall Menorah at the City Hall South Gallery.

The idea came about after Rabbi Tenenbaum visited City Hall last year during Chanukah, and saw they only had a small candle Menorah. He then reached out to Betsy Gardner, Neighborhood Liaison of the City Council President’s office and, together with the blessing of Council President Young,  secured the Baltimore City Hall Menorah. The Menorah was graciously donated by TDO Properties.

Betsy Gardner served as MC and the crowd of over 50 dignitaries and City employees heard greetings from City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young, Rabbi Shmuel Kaplan, Regional Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Maryland, and Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum. After the unveiling of the Menorah the Cheder Chabad of Baltimore Choir performed, and sang Chanukah songs.

The event included traditional foods such as jelly donuts and chocolate coins as well as menorahs and dreidels.

“I’m thrilled to partner with the Jewish Uniformed Service Association to celebrate this wonderful time of the year in the Jewish community,” Council President Young said. “Even if you aren’t of the Jewish faith, this event is an educational experience for children of all ages to come together and learn about each other.”

“Chanukah is a festival where we celebrate the winning of light over darkness,” Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum said. “The menorah is the symbol of that celebration which is why it’s so special to unveil the new City Hall menorah.”
