Algemeiner Awards Journalists for Fair Reporting

The Algemeiner honored masters of journalism at its fifth annual Summer Benefit on Thursday in New York City.

Former editor-in-chief of The New York Sun Seth Lipsky and renowned CBS News correspondent Lara Logan accepted the paper’s Journalist of the Year awards, and chairman of The Algemeiner Editor’s Club Barry Schiffman was saluted by editor-in-chief Dovid Efune.

More than 300 people attended the event, which was held at Manhattan’s upscale Midtown Loft & Terrace.

The evening was emceed by WPIX sports anchor Andy Adler, and included brief remarks from philanthropist Ari Ackerman and pro-Israel student hero Milan Chatterjee.

Prominent guests included New York Post columnist Benny Avni, philanthropist David Hochberg, artist and activist Ron Agam, Bloomberg View columnist Eli Lake60 Minutes producer Alan Goldberg and former editor-in-chief and publisher of The New Republic Marty Peretz.

In accepting his award, Lipsky — whom Lake introduced as a mentor to many of the country’s most prominent journalists — criticized the biased media coverage so prevalent today. He recalled that Theodor Herzl’s dream was to open a Jewish newspaper, a vision that was swept up in the larger project of Zionism, and said that he sees The Algemeiner as a progression of that hope and a response to the slanted reporting of some of the world’s largest news publications.

Introducing Logan, Goldberg described the foreign news correspondent as a “hurricane…passionate and fierce” about her work.

In her acceptance speech, Logan described what she believes must be every committed journalist’s perspective: “I know that I am nothing,” saying that there are many sides to a story but only one truth, and she serves to shine a light on the facts.

Praising the honorees, Efune used a chess analogy: “Politicians are like the kings. They are the tallest pieces, in positions of prominence. They can move in any direction, but only one space at a time. The journalist is the queen — there may be less glory in the role, but a journalist takes what he or she truly believes in his heart to be true and marches with it across the board,” saying that the reporters recognized that night “embody this spirit.”
