Crown Heights Startup Aims to Personalize Fitness

As a young teenager looking for a healthy after-school activity, Golda Reichman joined an all-women’s kickboxing class in her hometown of Detroit, MI. “I gained strength and confidence, and soon I was going a few evenings a week trying out a variety of workouts. I found it to be an amazing outlet and physical fitness has been a huge part of my life ever since,” she says of the experience. Now, she is determined to share that passion for physical health and fitness with the Crown Heights Jewish community, which is why she created StreetLite.

“After having my first few children and seeing the demands pregnancy and childbirth put on my body, I pledged to find a way to help other women regain their strength and energy,” Golda told CrownHeights.info.

Five years ago, Golda became certified as a pre/post natal personal trainer and fitness coach, and began working with women in Crown Heights. She soon saw how huge the demand was for women who needed personal attention – mainly to address their specific health concerns and workout needs.

“I needed to add to my certifications when I was approached by older women who needed tailor-made workouts, as well as somebody with easy access to medical knowledge who could understand their specific limitations. My father, being a physician with 35 years of experience, was able to provide that for me,” she said.

“As many clients as I took there were many others I simply did not have enough hours in the day for. In addition, I saw many women trying to exercise in ill fitting, non-supportive clothing, socks and shoes –leaving room for injury. The workout I provided also needed specific gear and equipment, none of which was sold in Crown Heights. This was a problem – as I wanted them to learn the workout and do “homework,” so each woman needed her own individual set.”

Thus the idea of StreetLite was born: a place where a certified trainer is on hand to consult with each customer, to talk over their fitness needs and goals, as well as guide them to making informed purchases based on each individual’s physical condition.

The StreetLite boutique will sell men’s, women’s, maternity and plus-sized active-wear. All items in their collection can be worn comfortably all day, transitioning from active wear to social wear. “We call this Athleisure,” reichman explained.

As the day ends, StreetLite will have personal trainers come in and set up for private evening classes, which will be kept small and personal. The plan is to eventually include classes for men, women, seniors and children/teens, Reichman said.
