Students Help Protect Israel with ‘Torah Dome’

Last Motzei Shabbos, due to the ongoing unfortunate situation in Israel, the Jewish community of Melbourne, Australia gathered to learn, daven and give tzedakah for the protection of Israel. During the following week, as the situation worsened, the Yeshiva Centre’s Year 8 class and their ‘Shliach’ Levi Druin gathered together to discuss what they can do to help.

This is what they were told by their Shliach:

“As the situation unfolds in Eretz Yisroel, all of us sitting in Melbourne can only hope and pray that everything will be alright. But really there is more we can do to help.”

“Take the human body. The entire body needs oxygen in order to survive, yet it is only the mouth and the lungs that are involved in the breathing. Also, when the mouth is speaking no one will say that only the mouth is talking and not the person, as that would be ridiculous! It’s the body speaking through the mouth.”

“Now imagine a person trapped under rubble and the only thing he can do is extend his arm to the rescuers. Through them having access to just his arm, not only will his arm be saved, but they can save his entire body! They can give him an IV drip, give him comfort etc.”

“During the time of the Iron Curtain, The Rebbe said that Torah is like our blood, we can’t survive without it. The Rebbe then asked: “How could it be that in Soviet Russia where there have been generations with some people not even doing a mitzvah, let alone learning Torah, people are alive!? Without Torah they shouldn’t be here!” (C”V) The Rebbe went on to answer: “The entire Bnei Yisroel is one body. When a Jew in New York is learning Torah, the entire body is learning! So through the guy in New York learning and giving himself life, he is also giving everyone in Bnei Yisroel life as well!”

So the boys understood that through learning Torah, not only will they be getting life and be protected, they will be protecting and giving life to everyone in Eretz Yisroel as well.

That’s how Operation Torah Dome was born. The boys took upon themselves that as a class they will learn one line of either Tanya, Misnayoes, or Hayom Yom by heart for each rocket that Hamas fires into Israel – each line to protect everyone from the rocket that is fired.

This Motzei Shabbos (Parshas Mattos) they gathered for the first time to begin learning. They sat for an hour and half straight and together they learned a grand total of 834 lines by heart! They are going strong and G-d willing will “catch up” with the rocket count very shortly.

A big thank you goes to Motti Rubin and Mendel Raskin for their assistance.
