Hunt Valley hotel evacuated due to partial roof collapse

A glass roof over an atrium at the Embassy Suites hotel in Hunt Valley collapsed this afternoon, forcing guests to evacuate and a Baltimore County structural engineer to later declare the hotel “unsafe for occupancy,” officials said.

No one was injured during the collapse, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m., according to Lt. Steven Miller of the Baltimore County fire department.

“There is no doubt that if there had been people standing or sitting in the atrium, that we would be dealing with a tragedy of significant proportions right now,” Baltimore County Fire spokeswoman Elise Armacost said. She said the atrium area is “open to the sky right now and it is a huge mass of huge chunks of glass and twisted metal.”

Guests will be allowed to return to retrieve their belongings but will not be permitted to stay at the hotel, according to Donna Welsh, a fire department spokeswoman. The building manager told fire officials that 130 of the hotel’s 223 rooms were occupied.

County building inspectors, BGE crews and county emergency management officials went to the hotel shortly after the collapse. Firefighters swept through the building, making sure that no one was injured or trapped and that all hotel guests were accounted for.

A structural engineer also went to the scene to evaluate the integrity of the atrium, which runs through the center of the hotel in the 200 block of International Circle near the Hunt Valley Towne Centre. One of the two glass roof sections above the atrium fell eight stories.

Although the other section remained in place, it was cracked, according to Welsh, the fire department spokeswoman.

Wednesday evening, guests were being escorted back into the building one room at a time to get their possessions, according to Dawn Ray, the director of brand communications for Embassy Suites hotels.

She said the hotel is helping guests and customers in the next two or three days to find alternate accommodations.

But she said the company didn’t have an estimate on when the hotel would reopen after an initial meeting of company officials this afternoon to decide how to repair the damage and replace the skylights.

The atrium of the hotel featured soaring glass ceilings and a landscaped foot path. The area also includes benches and tables, where breakfast is served daily, according to the hotel’s Web site.
