‘Miracles Like This Shouldn’t Have to Happen’

As we begin embracing the warmer weather by allowing our children to play outdoors and ride their bicycles, one Crown Heights family shares their memories from last year, when their 14-year-old boy miraculously walked away from what could have been a devastating accident.

On Monday, November 24th, 2014 A. [name withheld] was riding his bike to Yeshiva when he rode into the street without looking and was instantly struck by a car.

The car’s windshield shattered and the bike was destroyed, but – thanks to his helmet and G-d’s mercy – he walked away practically uninjured. Aside from a short precautionary stay in the hospital, the boy was back to school and his regular daily life.

Dr. Eli Rosen, a member of Hatzalah who was at the scene of the accident, said if it were not for his helmet the situation would have been far graver.

“These kinds of miracles should not need to happen” said a friend of the family, who encouraged the parents to share video footage of the incident with CrownHeights.info. “This should be enough of a reminder of how careful we need to be and educate our children of the dangers that await if we are not careful.”

A number of safety tips the Crown Heights Shomrim have shared in the past include:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Register your bicycle with the NYPD
  • Never ride your bicycle straight into the street, always walk it across instead
