Guyana Presidents’ Son Puts on Tefillin, Receives Matzah for First Time

With St. Lucia home to a permanent Jewish population of around 200—many of whom are part-time residents—Super is accustomed to keeping a keen eye out for Jews in his exotic neighborhood. So when he landed in Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown on his dreaded 24-hour stopover, he brushed off his exhaustion and got to work.

During an emotional visit to the site of the Baltimore Key Bridge collapse with members of the US Coast Guard and their chaplains, Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum of the Jewish Uniformed Service Association of Maryland approached the area where the bodies of the missing workers may be located. He requested the captain to stop the boat, and observed a moment of silence, followed by a prayer for those who lost their lives in this tragedy and their families.

As this Friday is the luminous day of Yud Aleph Nissan, the 122 year since the Rebbe’s neshoma came into this world, obviously the post would be about the Rebbe. However, while I was originally thinking of posting a story of the Rebbe, but because of the current state of affairs, I decided to present aspects of this very auspicious day as well as how the Rebbe viewed similar events.

Preparing for Passover Under Fire

Chabad Lubavitch Bariloche, led by Rabbi Boaz and Shifrah Klein, is the southernmost Chabad center in the Americas. Each Passover, they welcome some 1,000 Israeli backpackers and other tourists to giant public Seders. This year, they’ll be lucky if the number of guests exceeds 200.
